4 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Waimate Trail T T Emma Bailey New trail set to be a major attraction The full 67 km loop trail will link existing track networks between Studholme, Kelcey’s and Gunn’s Bush via Mt Studholme at the top of the Hunters Hills (stages 2 and 3). The Waimate Trail is progressing well and set to become an incredible asset for the community, project manager Jo Sutherland says. The trail for cyclists and walkers will be completed in three stages and the first stage is already halfway completed. “It’s the talk of the town now it is actually happening,” Jo says. “We have divided stage 1 into four parts and have fundraised for the first three. It’s great to see it coming into fruition, and the community has been incredibly supportive through donations and volunteer time. We have completed the stage through the Waimate Gorge, which runs along the old Waimate railway line. “The weather played ball, which was great. It is going to be a great community asset, and will help get people off the beaten track and bring them into Waimate. This will be great for local businesses, as well as offering more recreational opportunities for the region. “We’re working with key project partners, including Waimate District Council, landowners, Te Rūnanga O Waihao, Department of Conservation and NZ Transport Agency.” The full 67 km loop trail will link existing track networks between Studholme, Kelcey’s and Gunn’s Bush via Mt Studholme at the top of the Hunters Hills (stages 2 and 3). “There is nothing like this on the East Coast (a loop track) and it will be the boost for the area that the Alps to Ocean has been for neighbouring towns.” Jo is busy applying for funding. Their latest fundraiser, Miss Waimate, was a great success. Ten brave Waimate men traded their normal footwear for high heels with 250 tickets selling out to watch them strut their stuff. “We’ve also had bowling evenings and movie nights. It has really brought the community together. We are always looking for sponsorship and would love to hear from anyone who wants to help out.” The Waimate Trail will be a world-class visitor experience that celebrates the significant culture and heritage of the area taking in some of the most varied and spectacular scenery in South Canterbury. “The trail will pass through native forest, stunning limestone rock formations, tussock tops, river flats and valleys,” says Jo. Operating under Waimate2gether, which was formed in 2018, it has supported a number of local projects to help the community thrive, including revitalising the White Horse and Centrewood Park. It also brought disc golf to Waimate and coordinated the district’s first Winter Festival. Now the focus is the Waimate Trail. There are future options to link with the Alps2Ocean trail and other trails in Canterbury and Otago. The spectacular walk and cycle trail for all ages and abilities will be a place for family, friends and groups to adventure and explore the outdoors and improve health and wellbeing. The proposed Footsteps of our Ancestors sculpture trail will intertwine the narrative of the landscape and the history of the people past and present.
