DEVELOPMENT Consortium Construction: Otautahi Housing Project Consortium Construction, known as ‘the developer’s builder’, has been partnering with developers in New Zealand since 2004. Their capable team helped Christchurch rebuild after the Canterbury earthquakes and their partnerships continue to make a big impact. Having the right people with the right experience ensures Consortium Construction can reliably deliver commercial construction and housing projects that meet the client’s vision, from concept to completion. In the social and community housing space, Consortium Construction is a proven frontrunner. As well as winning a gold award at the 2025 NZ Commercial Project Awards for Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust’s (OCHT) Willard Street Social Housing development, Consortium Construction also won gold for a Homestar 8-rated apartment complex developed for Kāinga Ora on Riccarton Road that’s providing warm, energy-efficient homes for older tenants. Consortium Construction’s first partnership with ŌCHT was a new community housing complex in Tiwaiwaka Place, (replacing units in Cresselly Place demolished after the Canterbury earthquakes). There were 28 one- and two-bedroom homes in this development, all warm and efficient homes meeting Homestar 6 standards. Consortium Construction won a silver award at the 2021 NZ Commercial Project Awards in recognition of their quality work on this project. Since then, Consortium Construction has built several other multi-unit community housing projects with ŌCHT, including at Gowerton Place in Richmond (37 new homes, replacing 30 old housing units badly damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes), Coles Place in St Albans (33 Homestar 7-rated homes, replacing old council-built units that were well past their use-by date) and Carey St in Somerfield. The 40-home Carey St development, which opened in June 2024, was the city’s first purpose-built development to feature a mix of social housing, affordable market rentals and progressive home-ownership houses. The trust has praised Consortium Construction’s work as a main contractor ensuring that projects have been built and finished to an exceptionally high standard. Watene Pikia, construction manager – commercial/director at Consortium Construction, first started working for Consortium more than 10 years ago, and says there have been many memorable projects in that time. He began his career in construction as a building apprentice in Invercargill, where he worked for 10 years before moving to Christchurch to join Consortium Construction. “One of my favourite projects was the old McKenzie & Willis precinct – we did the work restoring the Ōamaru stone heritage façade [part of 181 High Limited developer Richard Peebles’ $50 million project on the corner of Tuam and High streets]. “It gave birth to a Christchurch institution – Little High Eatery. We’re about to do some extension work there; it all comes back when you’re there again.” Other standout city projects for the Consortium team have included Riverside Market, the Duncans Buildings, the Guthrey Centre retail shops and 76 Hereford St on The Terrace (Fat Eddies). 03 388 8777 www.nulook.co.nz quotes@instile.co.nz Proudly supporting Consortium Construction Transform your living space into a warmer and healthier home with the window solutions that we provide.
