REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Kennedy Aluminium Kennedy Aluminium of Timaru is very much a family business – three generations of the family have worked in the business, which has grown from a modest operation into one of the largest suppliers of First Windows & Doors systems in the central South Island. Kennedy Aluminium is owned and operated by Mike and Jolene Kennedy, with their daughter Jenna managing the office, HR and H&S, and son Hayden in the manufacturing arm, epitomising family values and customer service over a territory that stretches from North Canterbury to South and Central Otago. Mike bought the business in 2003, following a lifetime in the joinery trade that began in Oamaru with an apprenticeship as a school leaver. “I went on to work in windows and doors manufacturing in Ashburton, Christchurch and Nelson before buying this business in partnership with my father, who has since retired,” says Mike. “Bryan, my general manager, has been with us since day one. He started out as a junior fabricator.” Today, the Kennedy Aluminium team consists of 30 staff, including a management team of nine, bringing together over 150 years of combined industry experience. They are suppliers of First Windows & Doors, part of the APL Group, New Zealand’s largest privately owned window systems manufacturer. “The fact that we are tied in with APL is a huge point of difference. It’s an exceptional company to partner with,” says Mike. They offer a complete portfolio of entrance doors, plus window and door systems in the First Residential, Metro Series and ThermalHEART Technology range, plus a wide array of quality hardware options. The ThermalHEART range offers thermally broken systems that exceed the new H1 building code requirements. “With the new H1 code coming along, the ThermalHEART range is even more extensive, all the way through to its architectural products offering superior comfort and insulative effects,” Mike says. There are door styles to suit every need, from formal entrance doors to sliders and bifolds. Sliding doors, in particular, offer a comprehensive choice. “Our business motto really is to be delivered in full and on time. Including that it meets our quality standards. There are no shortcuts. We strive to be consistent with that on every project.” The company has completed aluminium joinery for several McDonald’s restaurants, including Green Island Dunedin, Rolleston, and Yaldhurst, and is currently working on joinery for Rydges Hotel in Queenstown. A notable project of recent times is Kennedy Aluminium’s own new workshop and showroom at 27 Washdyke Flat Road, a significant investment in a modern workspace designed to future-proof and align operations with new H1 building code guidelines. “We moved into our new premises last September, a 2200-square metre facility, which showcases the latest in glass technology, and products including PVC, which we’re covering a bit of, plus the workshop, which is twice the size of the old one and well-equipped with the latest in digital manufacturing equipment.” Built by McIntosh Commercial of Ashburton, the spacious layout allows for greater efficiencies and improved on-site health and safety combined with welcoming showroom environment for customers to explore product options.
