I did a business course before I bought it (with Icehouse) and came up with a plan. You compete on three things; quality, service and price. You have to pick two because you can’t do all three and survive” He decided to “play in our own sandpit” and focused on quality and service. “The price is the price to get it made with a sustainable margin. We are selling a product that is guaranteed for life. “The guys take ownership in their workmanship and weld their name on the draw bar. If they see someone with a Lochiel trailer they will go up and say hi and see everything is going well and it is doing what it should.” If it wasn’t they were told to bring it back and it would be ixed at no cost. On the very o chance that didn’t work he would buy it back and create the exact trailer they required. “Bad news travels 18 times faster than good news so we have to get it right.” In the bad old days if one came back for repairs, on a Friday he would go down the street In Winton and buy a box of beers and the engineer would have to ix it while the rest of the team had a few beers. “That guy would leave a trail of rubber after ixing it but learned from it. It was the hard knocks school of learning.” Word of mouth is the company’s best marketing. They visit a few ield days but inquiry mainly comes from the website.
