Nothing is contracted, which means we’re responsible for the project from start to finish.” Established 13 years ago by carpenter-joiner Ryan Clark, and joiner Hamish Drummond, Nelson-based Complete Kitchens started in a garage, but thanks to steady growth they now work out of a showroom in Nelson’s Queen Street and have enlarged their factory at Spring Grove. Despite the growth, they still enjoy the more personal touch of a relatively small company. “We’re very involved and have close relationships with our clients. Ryan and Hamish believe that our customer service, and not subcontracting, is the reason for our success and we work extremely hard to carry this on as the company grows,” says kitchen designer Tammy Kitney. The Complete Kitchens’ team of 16 works together to meet the joinery needs of the Nelson Tasman region. Kitchens, wardrobes, laundries, bars, or anything else that can be made from joinery, Complete Kitchens will design, build and install it, right there in Nelson, explains Tammy. “It’s all local, everything is done here. Nothing is contracted, which means we’re responsible for the project from start to finish.” Complete Kitchens take pride in the level of service they provide, helping people to achieve the design they want, at the right price point, and managing the project as needed to make sure of the desired outcome. They have a list of recommended tradies, such as electricians and plumbers they put the client in touch with directly, so there’s no clipping of the ticket. The process of working closely with the client to get to a place where they are happy with both the proposed design and its price has become more complex over the years as the number of options has sky-rocketed, along with the products to choose from. “Kitchens aren’t just about their functionality anymore. It’s the heart of the home now, and it’s a very emotional investment of time and money for the client,” says Tammy. Expectations have grown as trends come and go. People want to un-clutter their benches, so jugs, tea and coffee might go into a cupboard. Entertaining in the kitchen is on the rise, which often means a dedicated area to make that easier. The Complete Kitchens team starts by working with clients to understand how an area will be used by the household, talking to them about their needs, such as whether they cook for a family, do they love to cook and so on. From that they put together a concept to meet their needs and requirements, including what they call their ‘wow’ elements designed to make a point of difference in their kitchen. Importantly, what used to be sketched on a piece of paper is now entered into CAD (Computer Aided Design), which makes it a lot easier for clients to see and understand the design. Products and design trends may change, but one thing that doesn’t is the level of service Complete Kitchens provide, along with their craftsmanship. They stand by everything they do. “We’ve got really good staff and we take responsibility for what we do. Everybody has their roles but we’re all problem solvers,” says Tammy. It all feeds into their beautifully crafted, bespoke joinery, which has just won a number of awards at the Marlborough and Nelson Master Joiners Awards 2025: Best Kitchen under $30,000, and Emerging Designer, Best Kitchen between $35,000 and $70,000 and Customer Journey, and the Miles Sellers Supreme Award for Excellence in Workmanship and Expertise in Joinery and Design. It all adds up to an impressive amount of recognition for what Complete Kitchens stand for and the work they do.
