Paterson Joinery JOINERY Family-owned Timaru joinery business Paterson Joinery has been a cornerstone of craftsmanship across South Canterbury for 30 years, and is currently involved with the restoration and renovation of the historic Empire Hotel building on Church Street, Timaru. The company is collaborating with local interior designer Deborah Still, who is project- managing the transformation of this iconic structure into five, high-end apartments with views. Registered Master Joiner and owner of Paterson Joinery, Matt Valentine says the conversion to apartments is a good thing for Timaru, breathing life back into the historic building first constructed in 1867. “It’s good for Timaru, bringing the building back to life for another century,” says Matt. “We’re designing and making all the kitchen and wardrobe joinery for the first and second floors. It’s a high-end project, calling on some of the old-school joinery skills for historic buildings, much like the work I undertook when I worked in London.” Owner Matt and his wife Sara took over the reins of Paterson Joinery in 2017 from founders Alan and Kay Paterson. Now retired, Alan keeps his hand in with the workshop on occasion. Matt’s journey in joinery began straight out of school, and his hands-on expertise ensures every project meets the highest standards. “We pride ourselves on quality control and keeping a smaller team allows us to do that,” he says. The company’s collaboration with Deborah Still Interior Design is an enduring one, stretching back to the founding of the business – a fruitful partnership that continues today under Matt’s leadership. “She still lets us have creative flair with the design,” says Matt. “She’ll liaise with the customer, tweak everything, and get the colours and fixtures sorted and we’re the tradesmen that will make it happen.” Renowned for its bespoke kitchen design and manufacture, plus custom cabinetry, including wardrobes, vanities, laundries and internal stairs, Paterson Joinery has a broad portfolio of designer kitchens and transformative renovations. About 30% of the workload is renovations, a figure that has grown post-Covid, while the rest focuses on new residential builds. The bespoke full-service approach, flexibility, and commitment to quality set Paterson Joinery apart in the trade or direct-to-consumer service. Operating from their workshop on Rosewill Valley Road, Paterson Joinery’s accomplished team of three skilled and qualified joiners have worked on award-winning homes, including a notable entry in the 2024 Master Builder Home of the Year Awards. While not award chasers, their work often stands out when builders submit homes for “We’re designing and making all the kitchen and wardrobe joinery for the first and second floors. Paterson Joinery manages every aspect of the process from initial consultation, measure and quote, to 3D design modelling and installation. “We use the best hardware we can source for the job, and have good relationships with fixture and fitting suppliers, including stone bench top manufacturers,” says Matt. Paterson Joinery’s legacy is built on wordof-mouth and lasting relationships combined with customer-centric service that continues even after the job is complete.
