Residents in the care and dementia suites will enjoy a safe indoor/outdoor flow with ranch sliders opening out onto generous private deck areas. Thirty residential apart- ments will form part of the ‘Yacht Club’; a large building taking pride of place in the heart of the village with amenities that include a res- taurant, café, cinema, wellness centre, indoor pool and bar and library. Earthworks for Coastal View Lifestyle Village commenced four years ago and about 650,000 cubic metres of soil has been moved around the site to create a flat platform. Encompassing twelve hectares the village is expected to take approximately another four years to complete. While the project involves four earthworks and infrastructure stages covering the site, there are about twenty-six succinct construc- tion stages throughout the projects lifecycle. “Each of those stages typically involve approximately ten to fifteen homes and some include the Care Centre, which has now been completed, the specialist dementia Centre or the building of the Yacht Club.” A stand-out feature of all of Qestral’s villages is the digital connectivity and health monitoring system Qestral has developed in conjunction with tech company Spritely. Unique to Qestral Villages, Spritely is about giving people independence to live in their own homes longer, providing the ability to proactively measure and track health vitals using wireless bluetooth paired devices such as blood pressure. It’s also a valuable commu- nication tool. “It really is quite an innovative system. Each house has a tablet that details what’s going on in the village and allows one- touch video-calling between residents and cre- ates a communication system for the village itself. They can get medication reminders and it can be set up so your weight is monitored on your scales. “So if someone all of a sudden dramatically lost weight we can visit the person and gently make sure everything is OK. It enables people to book outings and go on trips.” During last year’s Covid lockdown, Spritely proved to be a valuable tool enabling resi- dents to remain connected with each other and to the village staff. “Our staff were able to run exercise classes that residents could follow via video.” Reflecting on the place and value retirement lifestyle villages have in New Zealand society, particularly with its aging population, Simon suggests first and foremost there is enormous benefit to the residents themselves. “That importance is around key things like loneliness often associated with our older population as it ensures people have commu- nication, fellowship and the opportunity to engage with other people. Villages increase security and independ- ence as they enable people to make decisions about where they want to go and what they want to do with the right level of support that suits them in a village environment.” Under the Occupational Right Agreement, retirement villages like Coastal View offer fi- nancial certainty. The weekly service fees paid by residents to cover rates and insurance are on a fixed fee basis and never increase while living in that home.
