Canterbury Linen Services’ new facility near the Christchurch Airport has been designed to contribute to a more sustainable future for New Zealand and to minimise the impact Can- terbury Linen Services has on the environment. It offers lower water usage by up to 50%, lower energy usage by 20 – 30%, lower trade waste, and a boiler fuelled by renewable woodchips. Hanham & Philp attended design meetings and provided valuable buildability and cost information during the staged design and procurement phase of the project. Shop drawings were commenced alongside detailed design, eliminating the traditional long-lead-time prior to steel erection on site. A new electronic survey system was used for the first time by Hanham & Philp on this project, with minimal and in some areas no profile or string lines required for setting out the building. Hanham & Philp quantity surveyor Paul Richards says the Leica Icon system was recommended by the project’s earthworks contractor Schick Civil Construction. Used more extensively in civil construction for exact placement of diggers and machin- ery, commercial construction firm Hanham & Philp Contractors decided to take the leap and purchase one. “The Canterbury Linen Services job was a good one to trial it on,” he says. “It worked brilliantly. Consultant CAD files were upload - ed to the system, providing all data to allow works to be set out, and not a single profile or string line was required for setting out the building. This provided huge benefits in both efficiency and accuracy.” Rather than pulling a string line up to 60m long, which has the potential to be blown out of place by a small gust of wind, posi- tioning was made precisely and exactly with the electronic survey system. “Being out by a few millimetres doesn’t sound like much, but when you’re lining up structural steel and precast panels, tolerances are critical and this electronic guidance system makes the job a lot easier.” With a significant volume of services within the build, along with the tenant’s own services and equipment subcontractors, coordination was a critical aspect of the project. Due to the nature of what was being installed in the building, brand new, special- ised state-of-the-art European linen cleaning equipment as well as much of the business’s current equipment, a large quality of penetra- tions for water, power, and mechanical were required. Hanham & Philp is continuing to use the system on its complex projects, and Paul says it is proving its worth. The firm has trained one of its senior staff into a new full time quality assurance role to manage all the 3D models and digital 2D files upon project acceptance.
