In recent times the councils have also made large areas of land available for commercial and residential development. “Part of the land hold up was around the Kaikoura earthquakes because we had to move where land was available due to lique- faction issues. It’s now looking very positive. Land for residential housing is coming on stream with sections available for the next four or five years, which we haven’t had for many years. Commercially there’s a lot going on around retirement villages and New Zea- land Housing has initiated affordable housing programmes in the region.” Rowan has been President of Master Build- ers Marlborough for the last two years and Vice President before that. “I’m not a natural leader, far from it, but I always seem to end up in these roles. “Across the board in all the trades very few people want to step up and take a leadership role. Rowan’s wife Donna is trained as a Quantity Surveyor and looks after all the company accounts, while their daughter Sophie deftly manages the office.
