James Templeton started his blacksmiths and wheelwrights business on Wicklow Terrace, Albert Town, where Templeton Engineering is still located today. The original business made wagon wheels for carts, milled timber on site for housing, made hinges for gates and wrought iron fences and gates, and shoed horses. “In the early 1900s, anything we would pick up the phone and order today, had to be fabricated in those days,” says Templeton Engineering managing director Matt Read. James’ son Charles took over the business in 1913 and gained a reputation for being able to fix almost any broken equipment. Farmers came from all over the district to have James work on their gear, and this helped to establish Templeton Engineering and consolidate its future, and even the future of Albert Town. Today, Templeton Engineering is the oldest continually operating business in the Upper Clutha. As time has moved on, so has technology, and Templeton Engineering has evolved with society and has continued to meet technological demands with the latest in equipment and gadgets. Charles’ sons Ralph and David Templeton joined the business in 1954, and Ralph took over a decade later. He was most influential in powering Templeton Engineering forward from old to new as huge leaps were made in technology from the 1970s. Ralph’s son Garry Templeton took over Templeton Engineering in 1996, and in 2020, he brought Matt Read into the business. Like Garry, Matt hails from an engineering family and harnessed his engineering skills from a young age. Garry and Matt share their vast expertise with a team of qualified tradesmen in an environment that’s lively and energetic. The team provides the full range of engineering services, predominantly working on structural steel for architectural housing, as well as some architectural fabrication, farm and haulage machinery, and general and mechanical engineering. Customers know Templeton Engineering is always happy to help with projects of any size, and that Garry and Matt are always available to talk things through. This type of personal communication and reliable, honest service has kept the Upper Clutha community coming back to Templeton Engineering decade after decade. Local enthusiasm for the historic brand has never waned. Expertise & experience Central Otago construction firm Christie Brothers Building has built numerous award-winning homes throughout the Wanaka region.
