THE “We had an extremely proficient site man- ager which made a huge difference to how the job ran.” About 60 staff are employed in ABL’s Dun- edin operation and there is a strong focus on training its apprentices. “We’ve got a very good apprenticeship programme, we’ve got about 13 apprentices at various stages on the books. “A lot of our [former] apprentices have now worked their way up to senior site managers now so they’re ABL trained right through. “We are always trying to take in a certain percentage intake of apprentices every year; we haven’t really changed the way we do things in that respect.” Headquartered in Invercargill, ABL also has branches in Queenstown and Christchurch. ABL is also the the appointed main con- tractor for the Invercargill Central redevel- opment, which is currently in progress and is a significant project for the company and Invercargill as a whole. The project, which is now well underway, comprises the demolition and redevelopment of the majority of a block in Invercargill’s central retail precinct, with an estimated total project cost of $165 million.
