First time entrants, Fowler Homes Ota- go took out a gold award and were named category winner in the Volume/Group Housing New Home $450,000 - $750,000 category. Fowler Homes Otago directors Nicky and Mel Fowler say that build demonstrates the high levels of care and attention to detail they bring to every project. “The customer came to us with a lot of ideas and we were the vehicle to implement these for them to create their dream home,” says Mel. “It was the result of close communication, understanding their needs and then delivering exactly what they wanted.” He says that ease of living was a paramount consideration when designing the single-level monopitch home that has been sited for all day sun. The outdoor area including large kwila deck, outdoor fire, barbeque, water feature and paving that wraps around the perimeter of the home results in the perfect place to relax. Inside, connected living spaces mean there is a natural, easy flow. Four bedrooms and two living areas, one featuring an elegant fireplace for the ultimate in comfort, further enhance the feeling of relaxation. The kitchen, complete with butler’s pantry, has a Scandinavian influence with pale timber accents and a black and white palette. The colour scheme continues in the splashback and black cabinetry and feature tiled walls in the bathrooms. Started in 1984, Fowler Homes is one of New Zealand’s longest standing group build- ing companies. It offers a fixed price contract with a Master Builders’ guarantee. Nicky has been operating Fowler Homes Otago for 14 years. Growth of the business meant that she has been joined full time by Mel, who has an extensive background in sales and marketing, in the past few years. Fowler Homes Otago focuses on quality design and build projects maximising the site and home for sun and outdoor living. It builds entry level to upmarket homes. It builds from customers’ plans or offers its own range for inspiration and seamlessly guides people through the whole design and build process. This close relationship they build with cli- ents can be seen in the fact that showhomes have not been a necessary part of their business as clients are often happy for their homes to be used as examples of the high quality results the company achieves. Further accentuating the benefits of this process Fowler Homes was surveyed as one of the top nationwide builders in the 2014 BRANZ customer satisfaction survey “That’s the unique thing about building with Fowler Homes Otago. Our customers get to work with the owners for the whole project until the day they move in and we hand them the keys and that’s what results in award winning homes,” explains Mel. “We build relationships with our customers and build to their individual budget, aiming to maximise its value in their build. “By having the personal approach and get- ting to know them so well we can provide the right advice so they get the home they always wanted. Basically we aim to build homes of a quality that Nicky and I would be happy to live in ourselves.” Fowler Homes Otago builds from Oamaru to Balclutha and across to Roxburgh. Demand in Dunedin means that the majority of the builds the company is currently undertaking are in this region. Mel says commercial developments such as the new hospital and growth with the uni- versity are seeing the population of Dunedin increase rapidly meaning build companies are busy.
