Based in Invercargill, the company has a strong construction presence in a diverse range of sectors in Southland and Central Otago including residential, commercial, additions and alterations, fencing, decking and renovations. Jason Gorton Building now has a well-es- tablished team based in Cromwell to cope with the steady amount of work available in Central Otago. Jason says that this has created efficiencies as well as cost savings for clients, “rather than sending staff away and charging accommoda- tion costs.” “Several of our qualified staff are foremen who can oversee jobs and drive them and I can project manage from a distance and keep- ing everything moving forward,” he says. “We take a comprehensive approach to pro- ject management, providing our clients with a wide range of contracting services to cover their building and renovation needs.” Jason and his wife, Michelle, employ 12 staff including a designer and with Jason off the tools these days most of his time is spent ensuring projects are running smoothly. In a busy construction economy and with projects always in various stages of construc- tion, good coordination of materials and sub- trades is crucial to eliminating down time and to achieve timely completion of any project, he says. Following the corona virus lockdown and with the incentive of low interest rates people are motivated to get onto their building pro- jects, Jason says. T Russell Fredric “The building climate that we are in at the moment has pushed people to get things done. There is money that was going to go overseas that’s going to be kept in the country now.” Jason cautions, however, that choosing a builder with a solid track record, including having the ability to provide references for work completed, being a Licensed Building Practioner and a member of a trade organ- isation such as Master Builders is essential protection for clients. The renovation of a character home and which Jason Gorton Building were asked to take over the project from another company is an example of a project requiring a skilled and professional team. The two story five-bedroom house was remodelled from top to bottom which also provided the opportunity to bring the insula- tion up to the current building code. “The client wanted to modernise it and cre- ate a very, very modern spin on it. The exteri- or was modernised as well, plus we did a large deck and covered area with a split level deck covered by louvres and featuring a fire pit. Both Jason and his client are delighted with the overall result. “They absolutely love it, they love everything about it, especially the outdoor area, we focused on getting that to a high standard to make it a great space for the Southland climate.” With the housing economy extremely buoyant and Invercargill’s central business district rebuild in full swing, Jason has a lot of optimism looking forward. “It’s definitely moving forward, that’s all going to change the game quite a bit and keep the market interesting. There’s definitely plenty happening down here.” “We take a comprehensive approach to project management, providing our clients with a wide range of contracting services to cover their building and renovation needs.”
