| 103 llam Medical Centre The new centre on Memorial Ave meets high standards of energy efficiency and is clad in cedar. COMMUNITY Ilam Dental Centre is a second generation, family-owned dental practice o ering gentle and a ordable dentistry. Existing premises on Waimairi Rd have served the practice well, but excitement is now building ahead of a planned move to new, purpose-built facilities at Ilam Health (110 Memorial Ave) later this year. When founded nearly 50 years ago by Peter Malcolm, Ilam Dental was one of the irst suburban dental practices in Ōtautahi Christchurch. From the very start, patient comfort and care were the number one priority. The decision to join other healthcare providers in a modern new building further builds and reinforces that ongoing commitment. “We will be the second biggest practitioner by space at Ilam Health [after Ilam Medical Centre],” observes Ilam Dental Surgeon John Malcolm, who purchased the practice from his father in 2013. “We will be doubling the physical size of our practice. The new space will include ive surgeries, a dedicated imaging room and a lab. We have also made a reasonably signi icant investment in new equipment and will be moving to a more digital work low. It is quite a transition and we’re really excited for it.” The integrated healthcare model that Ilam Health represents is a welcome development for the Ilam community in every sense, he suggests. “All the facilities are modern and IlamDental prepares for bigmove to state-of-the-art IlamHealth state-of-the-art, with a purpose-built layout. There is plenty of on-site parking and excellent access to rooms throughout the building. A lot of our patients are in their 70s and upwards and have also been going to Ilam Medical Centre for many years. Having everything on one site – doctor, dentist, pharmacist and other allied health practitioners - will make life a lot easier for them.” Moving fromWaimairi Rd will be tinged with nostalgia for John, who grew up alongside the dental practice that his father founded at their family home in December 1973. As the practice expanded and took up more ground loor space, a second storey was added to accommodate the family. “Dad was a crowns and bridges’ specialist, and Mum was a ceramicist. It was a huge advantage clinically when I began my studies at dentistry school in Dunedin because I was already so familiar with everything!” After graduating in 2002, John spent a year working in facial surgery, followed by four years in private practice and working for the dental school in Dunedin. He moved back to Christchurch in 2007 to join the family practice. “Today, we’re seeing the grandchildren of patients my father started out with, along with a lot of people who used to live in Ilam but still like to come here for their dental treatments.” 03 348 1602 www.ilamdental.co.nz Excited to be joining the Ilam Medical Development in 2022 Ilam Dental - Your Friendly Christchurch Dentists • Regular Dental Checkups • Ceramic Crowns • Dental Bridges • Dental Implants • Cosmetic Dentistry • Laser Dentistry • Bleaching & Whitening • Wisdom Teeth 03 351 0886 ∙ contact@footprintspodiatry.co.nz 259 Ilam Road, Christchurch ∙ www.footprintspodiatry.co.nz dental implants, bridges, and cosmetic dentistry. As part of the move to Ilam Health, Ilam Dental has invested in new 3D dental x-ray equipment that will be used for precision imaging to support dental implant work. Complementing the key tenants are seven other allied health practices. Ilam Physiotherapy Clinic (Gerald Cummins) and Footprints Podiatry (Howard Nicholas and Ryan Primrose) will move into the new building at the end of May. They will be joined by Ilam Acupuncture (Joyce Zheng) and FoodSavvy dietitian Clara Fergus. Completing the Ilam Health clinical line-up are Rashi Gedakar, psychotherapist with Puriri Psychotherapy; Sue Williams, counsellor from SMJ Counselling; and Kemintra Phongkaso from Laya Massage & Aroma Therapeutic. The old corner medical centre site, constructed over 50 years ago, is also now poised for demolition and redevelopment, with the owner recently confirming plans to construct another integrated health centre alongside Ilam Health which will further expand the health services that can be offered to the community. It is exciting news for local residents who are already starting to access and benefit from expanded health services progressively coming on stream at Ilam Health. Having so many health practitioners all in one place, in purpose-built premises, is set to make a big difference in the lives of residents and the health of the whole community.
