In total the expansion will encompass 600sqm, of which 90sqm will be for the hospital’s own purposes, with the larger proportion leased to Pacific Radiology. With 15 inpatient beds, a14-bed day surgery unit, and three fully equipped operating theatres Bidwill is the only private surgical hospital in the South Canterbury region and offers and extensive range of services including general surgery, orthopaedic, ear/nose/throat, gynaecology, endoscopy, and ophthalmology. “Our patients come from all over Mid/South Canterbury and North Otago areas and even down into Central Otago,” says Hospital General Manager Tina Rogers. “Currently there are no radiology services on our site and Pacific Radiology approached us as they were looking to expand their existing services within the South Canterbury area. We believed that was particularly complementary to our services. The addition of radiology services was an opportunity to broaden the suite of offerings that are available on our site.” The expansion also provided an opportunity to add to the hospital’s footprint, increasing the size of its storage capacity as well as its sterilising area to meet an on-going increase in patient numbers. Bidwill hospital is owned by a Charitable Trust and Tina says that over the years the Board had been very forward thinking, purchasing neighbouring properties to enable future expansion as opportunities arose. Pacific Radiology has been a key partner in the design of the facility throughout the project with initial discussions commencing early 2020. “Ian Cattoen-Gilbert from Christchurch practice Totem Studio Architects was selected to design the facility. Ian had previously been involved with a number of Pacific Radiology projects and was very familiar with its requirements and needs. Ian has taken an active lead in the project, both for ourselves and for Pacific Radiology.” While local engineers Milward Finlay Lobb provided structural engineering services for the project, Powell Fenwick was engaged for mechanical/hydraulics/electrical/fire engineering services. The build of the expansion is being led by Timaru Construction Ltd. The expansion physically adjoins the existing hospital and stretches onto the two neighbouring properties, both of which had houses on them. While one neighbouring house was demolished some while ago, the other was recently demolished to accommodate a variation in the project that also impacted on timing. Initially the Stage One footprint encompassed 400sqm and included the hospital occupied part of the project, along with a large area for Pacific Radiology to accommodate a CT scanner, X-Ray and Ultrasound, with the ability to further expand for an MRI scanner as Stage Two. Tina says Pacific Radiology later felt that because of strong demand for MRI scanning within the South Canterbury community there was a need to bring the MRI scanner into the project earlier than the previous timetable had indicated. “We agreed with Pacific Radiology to delay their part of the expansion and complete it all in one single stage, incorporating the MRI scanner into the design. The hospital occupied part of the project has now been completed, and the building envelope is almost completed and the fitout will begin soon for the Pacific Radiology part of the project, which is expected to be completed mid 2022.” Tina has been involved in the project and discussions with Pacific Radiology right from the beginning, putting in place lease agreements, adding hospital input to design and working with the engineers. She says the communication and cooperative nature with Pacific Radiology has been a significant contributing factor to the success of the project, and achieving the good outcomes for South Canterbury community. “We recognise we have an aging population and a lot of these services are critical to their needs. The benefits of the project will be the availability of services, particularly CT and
