44 | Rayonier Matariki Forests FORESTRY Promoting forestry as career path from page 43 Rayonier Matariki Forests is New Zealand’s third largest forestry company with approximately 120,000 hectares of plantations. “I’ve been in the industry for a long time – 47 years. You surround yourself with good people and everything flows from there. We have great contractors and work very closely with them, supporting them with training in anyway we can. “We have a nationally based Quality Manager who is organising training all the time. We’re quite strong in that space.” Active community involvement is another key to Rayonier’s success, embracing involvement in things like Road safety campaigns, some of which are industry driven and some by Rayonier. “In Canterbury this year we’re doing a small planting job up by Lake Janet in Ashley Forest. We’ve been harvesting close by Lake Janet so we’re taking some of that area out of production and putting a native buffer around there and we’re inviting the Broomfield School pupils to help with this planting, so we can show them how both exotic and native forests are established.” Actively promoting forestry as a career and the diverse range or career options available to school levers and graduates is another way Rayonier engages with the community. “In Southland we organise a forestry careers seminar in Winton. We invite all the schools around Southland and have a variety of industry companies showcasing what career opportunities there are in the industry. Throughout all our regions we invite schools to come and see our operations and we work closely with the School of Forestry at the University of Canterbury.” 021 518 729 brian@makerikeri.co.nz 027 545 2337 jade@makerikeri.co.nz Woodsmen Tree Service
