Business Compliance Manager Ellen Taylor brings this quality to life saying many of the company’s managers who have come from Tier One Contracting Companies often talk of the simplicity of working for a company where they can pick up the phone or walk down the hallway to talk to one of the directors to get a decision, rather than going through multiple layers of management. “Our directors, Tony Moir and Bruce Tinnelly are both involved in the business on a day-to-day basis,” says Ellen. Established in Timaru over 35 years ago, Paul Smith Earthmoving has grown from being a South Canterbury based company, expanding into other South Island regions, and diversifying its operations to successfully complete large-scale earthmoving and civil construction projects. The company now has branches in Timaru, Christchurch, Greymouth, and Cromwell, with satellite o ices in Ashburton and Twizel, enabling projects to be undertaken in South and Mid Canterbury, Canterbury, West Coast, Central Otago and the Mackenzie region. With over 180 permanent sta , complemented with up to 50 temporary sta at any given time, Paul Smith Earthmoving has the lexibility to adjust resource to not only meet programmed requirements but also adapt should the project scope change. “We have a broad range of positions within the company including labourers, machine operators, supervisors, project managers, engineers, drain layers, truck drivers, mechanics and other workshop personnel supported by a range of managers and administration sta ,” says Ellen. While core customer sectors vary branch-by-branch, Paul Smith Earthmoving’s client mix includes commercial and residential clients along with central government agencies and local councils. “In Timaru a large portion of our work undertaken is for residential clients and building contractors. For example, the Timaru team is currently working on residential subdivision in the McKenzie region. We’re also a key subcontractor to Downer for the Waka Kotahi South Canterbury’s Network Outcome Contract. Our Timaru team has been undertaking work for Port Blakely for several years, maintaining the forestry roads, along with providing some land clearance.” In Christchurch Paul Smith Earthmoving’s projects are generally large-scale subdivisions, commercial developments, and aged care facility projects. “We can do the earthworks, site works, drainage and landscaping — everything minus the build essentially. Our Greymouth Branch delivers a mix of commercial and residential projects spread around the West Coast and we also hold the Utilities Maintenance contract (3 waters) for the Grey District Council, which is a long-term contract. That contract has assisted us to establish ourselves in the West Coast District. We have completed multiple drainage upgrades and roading projects in di erent regions across the South Island.” The company’s projects in Central Otago have been predominantly commercial and residential development projects including several subdivisions in the region.
