For example, M&R Forestland Management’s monthly turnover is in the multi-millions — the vast majority of which goes out in wages to its contractor workforce and then to the myriad of businesses supporting those contractor crews. While the benefit of that money is felt throughout the local community, there are broader benefits in terms of the social and well-being good from employment, along with the vibrancy of schools, sports clubs and community organisations. “We sponsor different things in the local Marlborough community — whether it’s a sport team or disadvantaged children or riding for the disabled,” says Kyle. “We also sponsor some music therapy for children who have special needs. “And we issue permits for people to enter many of our forests for a range of activities including mountain biking, hunting, horse riding, walking and running. I think that is a pretty cool thing.”
