62 | MINING Birchfield Energy & Resources from page 60 Caltex Lubricant Distributor Coal from the mines is sent to a number of distribution centres around the Coast for road or rail transport to market. Phil emphasises that BCML’s most valuable resource is its people, with the miners highly skilled bringing many years of experience. “It’s not an easy job by any stretch of the imagination. The earthmoving, the extraction of coal and even the operation of the dump trucks, bulldozers and all the other machinery we use require a high level of skill. “It’s not something learned over night and we value those people because of the skills they bring. The mechanics may still be covered from head to toe in grease, and they may still swing a hammer or a wrench, but they’re also plugging in sophisticated diagnostic computers to identify and fix an error that has come up in a piece of machinery.” With the narrative from the Government and others about the cessation of coal mining, Phil acknowledges that it is hard for people to see coal mining as a career, but many of the skills learned are very transferable to other industry sectors. “You would have your head in the ground if you didn’t see coal mining as a sunset industry, but when that sunset occurs is any ones guess. “Estimates are that coal mining will be around in some shape or form till 2040 and who know what will happen within that time. But there are the economic impacts if coal was no longer available or economically viable. “If Co2 is the issue then the solution is going to be around carbon capture, sequestration and clean burning technologies.” Powering essential services The coal is also supplied to a number of customers in the South Island, some of which is exported.
