Providing on point and practical legal advice tailored tomeet their clients’ needs is the forté of Canterbury based legal practice Tavendale & Partners. Celebrating twenty years in business last year, Tavendale & Partners was founded in Christchurch with an early focus on providing legal advice and support within the agri-business sector and the rural community. A natural complement to agribusiness, specialist commercial and property law advice became a mainstay for the practice and large teams in those sectors have been established within the irm. The practice expanded with themerger of two Ashburton based law irms and will soon be opening an o ice in Dar ield. “We consider ourselves to be a nationwide legal practice,” says Partner Jonathan Pow. “While Canterbury is where our heart and the bulk of our client base is, we look after clients not only across the South Island but throughout New Zealand. Much of that geographic spread has come about through our team’s reputation beyond the Canterbury region for its legal acumen and referrals fromother clients.” A specialist focus on commercial and complex property law, along with agribusiness law has necessarily led to developing expertise within Resource Management and Environmental law, which Jonathan says has been critical to correctly advising clients. Tavendale & Partners “The bulk of our client base is in some way connected to the agribusiness sector. Many of our clients have businesses that operate within the rural sector but are corporate entities — including corporate farms, landowners and developers. They could also be long-standing family farmoperators. We provide a lot of advice around succession and legacy planning. There’s considerable strategic advice that goes into succession planning. You really have to know your client’s business and their family arrangements. Succession is about bringing everything together, making sure personal documentation and a airs are all in order and that business a airs are properly structured and compliant.” Jonathan points to recent changes to trusts law that has resulted inmany professional trustees withdrawing from that line work because of the increased risk and duties. “We’ve taken a di erent approach. We recognise those clients with trusts need independent and professional guidance, nowmore than ever. So we’ve embraced the changes and continue to actively provide professional trusteeships through the trust management armof our business and the provision of specialist advice in respect to the recent law changes. Trusts also form a large part of succession planning and they need to be it for purpose. We can o er guidance in that respect.” +64 3 374 9999 +64 3 308 4188 you+us@tp.co.nz www.tp.co.nz
