T T Hugh de Lacy The recent arrival in New Zealand of an advanced American-made decking board is opening up opportunities in the Christchurch building market for Hawkins Built, a 2020 start-up that’s working well for owners Latia and Jacob Hawkins. The board, which Hawkins Built currently acquires directly from the importer, is called TimberTech Advanced PVC, and its key selling point is that, once laid, it requires no maintenance. “It’s a board that never moves, twists or rots, and very little expansion and contraction compared to composite decking, on top of that a 50 year residential warranty brings peace of mind,” Jacob says. With the correct method it can be heated to allow bending the boards to make curved features. We have also heat folded boards to make a seamless bullnose features around a pool edge. “It’s also very popular around pools because it’s safe for bare feet, being 30% cooler to the touch than competitors products.” Jacob and Hawkins Built have begun targeting the local decking construction market with TimberTech, signaling a broader range of services they can provide, supplemented by an extensive repertoire of renovations and extensions. Jacob’s taking the association with the product a bit further, by taking part in further training with heat bending the product, and to become a recommended installer. “The process is under way, and it’ll result in the product gaining widespread use throughout the country,” he says. Jacob has been in the building industry for nearly 20 years, finishing his apprenticeship with Frost Architectural Builders of Christchurch, coming out of his time in 2008 and placing second in the Central South Island Apprentice of the Year. In this time, he has worked on and run several gold award winning homes in the Master Builders House of the Year Awards. He finally launched Hawkins Built, along with wife Latia, four years ago, and today they employ one other tradesmen carpenter and a third-year apprentice. Hawkins Built has done a lot of outdoor residential work in between the new home builds, so the focus on decking with the revolutionary TimberTech is a promising direction for the company to take. “But we’re not specialising yet: we’re still committed to doing a broad range of work,” Jacob says. We thrive on out of the ordinary projects and have the experience to deliver them. 0274 649 444 info@hawkinsbuilt.co.nz www.hawkinsbuilt.co.nz HawkinsBuilt Proudly providing Canterbury with quality building solutions Blackwood Bay home showcases builder’s skill T T Bernadette Cooney Blenheim based builders, Flynn & Griff Construction Ltd are a renowned and respected local team, currently building a contemporary new family holiday home at Blackwood Bay within the coveted natural landscape of Queen Charlotte Sound. Their current project epitomises their commitment to excellence. Tasked with crafting a new legacy on a property handed down for generations, Flynn & Griff embark on a journey to merge tradition with innovation. Enough of the old home will be incorporated so that anyone with an association with the old home would be able to recognise something of it within the new build. Designed by Arthouse Architects the new 320 sq. metre family bach, pays homage to its past by reusing parts of the former home, now demolished. This includes rimu timber architraves, planted block walls and interior doors. “Apart from that it’s a whole new build incorporating a lot of concrete and steel, with first floor balcony and wrap around decking on the ground floor.” The new four-bedroom, three-bathroom holiday home replaces a tired weatherboard and brick bach that had stood in the same location for almost 100 years, being passed down to generations of the same family who are building the new holiday home today. A relatively complex build, unlike anything they’ve done before says co-owner Dave Griffiths. “Never done one quite it like it. It’s beautifully situated in its own secluded bay with lovely views.“ It’s a high spec two storey home on a flat section and the owners want to preserve some of the old home’s features within the new build.” The light and spacious interior features high vaulted ceilings in living areas, wood burner and modern fixtures and fittings including new kitchen with kitchen island benchtop. The exterior will be clad in cedar timber and Coloursteel roofing. Access to the site is by boat or barge only, one of several challenges on the build which they hope to have complete by the end of this year, says Dave who co-owns Flynn and Griff Construction with business partner Wayne Flynn. “Together we have over 40 years of building experience. We’re both registered and licensed builders and Wayne started his career as a joiner, so he brings excellent joinery skills to each project.” Dave and Wayne offer a full design and build service throughout Blenheim and the Marlborough Sounds from new builds, renovations, rural homes and sheds, insurance repairs, light commercial and retaining walls, decks and fencing. Whether it’s an urban family home or lifestyle block or a holiday home, Flynn and Griff Construction can build it to a high standard and offer a skilled, professional and reliable service. The Blackwood Bay home stands as a testament to Flynn & Griff’s unwavering commitment to quality. Reflecting on past successes, including a woolshed conversion, a family bach in Kumutoto Bay, and various residential projects, the company continues to redefine the landscape of the Marlborough building industry. With each project, Flynn & Griff Construction shapes the region’s architectural landscape while embodying the values of craftsmanship, innovation, and dedication to client satisfaction.
