112 | BUILDING Hohepa Canterbury Preparations are well underway for Hōhepa Canterbury’s 60-year celebrations, with some exciting events being planned. Volunteers invaluable part of community T T from page 111 “With us reaching 60 years next year, there are a lot of memories there. We have had so many staff and volunteers over that time, as well as families of course.” Hōhepa employs 338 staff, working parttime or full-time in various rostered shifts. In a recent staff survey, 90% rated Hōhepa as a great place to work. Jacqueline says they are always looking for more support coordinators. Job vacancies are listed on their website. “We believe in promoting people from within where we can. We have examples of people who started in one role, developed their skills, grew their responsibilities and then took up other roles with us. People can learn with us while they’re working here too and we also have students working on placements.” Volunteers are another invaluable part of the Hōhepa Canterbury community. Of the current 69-strong team of volunteers, 24 are from Cashmere High School. Senior student volunteers often use their lunch or study breaks to help out at Hōhepa. “They bring fresh energy and have developed great relationships with the people we support.” Jacqueline says the establishment of Whaikaha Ministry of Disabled People in 2022 is ushering in change and bringing greater focus on disability care. “We’re working towards a future where disabled people have full choice and control. Enabling people to live their life as they want to is central to our strategic vision.” Sustainability is another key focus for Hōhepa Canterbury as it seeks to reduce its carbon footprint. “We also want to be economically sustainable. Our latest research suggests we have a 15% shortfall in funding for what we do and provide.” Donations are welcome and make a big difference. “We rely on the generosity of individuals, charitable trusts and organisations in the wider community to continue our special character and the quality of life this offers.” Meanwhile, Jacqueline says preparations are already well underway for Hōhepa Canterbury’s 60-year celebrations, with some exciting events being planned. “We’re working towards a future where disabled people have full choice and control.
