T T to page 116 Over a weekend in June, the hallowed halls of the Methven Golf Club will fill with supporters as it celebrates a significant milestone. It is 100 years since the club’s first tee off, and today it continues to go from strength to strength. The centenary will take place at the clubrooms on June 7 and 8, with a “meet and greet” on the Friday from 5pm, and on Saturday photos in the morning, golf in the afternoon and dinner at night. Centenary committee chair Phil Johnson said they were looking forward to celebrating the milestone. “We’ll take as many as we can get, and they’ll all have a good time. “(It’s about) renewing some old friendships and a few stories from the past.” The club’s first course was opened at a block of land at the racecourse on June 7, 1924, with nine holes. There were 27 members signed up. Dave Christie, who was a keen golfer and had played in Scotland, laid out the course by teeing off with a wood and then an iron – where the ball landed was the green. Women members were fully integrated from the beginning of the club, something that set it apart, centenary committee chair Phil Johnson says. “It was probably a bit unusual for golf clubs.” In an extract from minutes taken in 1926, it states that subscriptions were set to an amount that “all who wish to enjoy the game may do so without hardship”. “So, it had to be within the reach of everybody,” Phil said.
