The project also comprised of a new adjoining car park, player dug outs, eight light towers, a new water gun system and high-ball fencing, while the park is also gaining a new two-storey pavilion. COMMUNITY Marlborough District Council / Robinson Construction - College Park When tasked with the challenge of constructing a new artificial hockey turf within six months, the result has been a very efficient build process, says Marlborough District Council Projects and Contracts Manager Maighan Watson. “The deadline was crucial to ensure Marlborough Hockey’s seamless relocation from the old turf to the new, and local contractor Findlater Construction exceeded those expectations,” she says. The College Park project also comprised of a new adjoining car park, player dug outs, eight light towers, a new water gun system and high-ball fencing. The international regulation artificial turf has been constructed using an innovative product called Ecocept, a porous layer found under the synthetic turf. Ecocept, supplied and installed by TigerTurf, is made from recycled rubber and end of life plastic. Benefits of Ecocept include improved drainage capacity, a faster and cost-efficient base construction, as well as acting as a highspec shock pad for player protection. The park is also gaining a new two-storey pavilion, designed by Arthouse Architects, and constructed by local contractor Robinson Construction. The pavilion was constructed via a timber Potius Building System, used for the floor, roof and framing. Maighan says the Potius system is quickly becoming popular for commercial and community facility builds in New Zealand due to its efficiency. “The system is accurate, from architectural design to fabrication off-site, and quick to assemble,” she says. Built predominately from engineered timber, Potius is a structurally efficient system. Being lightweight reduces loads on gravity and seismic systems, minimising cranage requirements and overall building costs. The system is simple and efficient to install and for this project was largely built off-site. The 590sqm two-storey hockey pavilion building comprises a ground level of four changing rooms and showers, irrigation pump room, a meeting room, a lift and storage. The top floor has a kitchen, large community area and an external deck. Marlborough District Council facilitated the early procurement of materials across both projects, alleviating any external pressure on contractors, and ensuring the project was delivered on budget and within the required timeframes. Other contractors involved in delivering the artificial turf project included Cuddon Engineering (which completed the irrigation work for the project), specialist electrical company Callahan & Martella Electrical, TC Nicholls, Renner Fencing and Men at Work (traffic control equipment and personnel). The state-of-the-art artificial hockey turf project is nearing completion and will be ready for use by mid-2024. Maighan says the artificial turf and new pavilion will be a real asset for the local hockey community. The new home of Marlborough Hockey will open the doors for club games and visiting tournaments, as well as providing a new gathering place for committee meetings, club days and volunteers. The new artificial hockey turf and pavilion are located at Marlborough Girls’ College in Marlborough. The new Council-owned facility will be shared between Marlborough Girls’ College and Marlborough Hockey. A dawn blessing and naming of the new facility will take place in mid-May 2024 with four local Iwi. “The system is accurate, from architectural design to fabrication off-site, and quick to assemble.” PROUD TO WORK WITH MARLBOROUGH DISTRICT COUNCIL & ROBINSON CONSTRUCTION • Heat Pumps • System Design • Plant Audits • 24 Hour Service • Preventative Maintenance • Equipment Supply • Air Conditioning • Coolrooms & Freezers • Industrial & Winery Refrigeration ACTIVE REFRIGERATION MARLBOROUGH LTD 37 Kinross Street, Blenheim PHONE: (03) 577 7345 3/27 Packham Crescent, Stoke PHONE 035449139 FOR REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING EMAIL: info@activerefrig.co.nz WEB: www.activerefrigeration.co.nz BRANCHES NATIONWIDE
