Bird Built: Russely Park & Ride T T Kim Newth REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Finding a car park near Christchurch Airport is now much easier with the addition of Airpark Canterbury’s new Russley Road park and ride facility south of the airport. The new addition complements Airpark Canterbury’s other location to the north on Logistics Drive, which has 600 affordable short and long term car parking spaces, plus on-demand shuttle and car detailing services. The Russley Rd site offers an additional 685 parking spaces, along with on-demand shuttle services, car detailing services, an automated drive-through car wash and free EV charging stations. Christchurch building company Bird Built, which won the tender to build Airpark Canterbury Russley Road, started work last October and delivered on site in double quick time. “We’re delighted that Christchurch now has this new park and ride facility that’s so close to the airport,” says Bird Built Director Cameron Bird. “It was a really good, smooth job for our team, working for landowner Jaxx property. Everything went as scheduled - we handed over to Airpark Canterbury at the end of February. A car wash was added to the project half-way through and we built that as well. “For me, what really stands out about this project is just how fast it came together. Everything ran to plan and on schedule. Good site coordination was crucial. We were regularly communicating with our trades so everyone knew where to be and when.” Bird Built’s team worked closely with others on-site such as the civil work providers (Marshlands Bobcats). “We worked out how we could both do our jobs at the same time.” The Russley Road site encompasses 1.9 hectares near the airport. Bird Built constructed the facility’s 200sqm office/reception building, including a 120sqm canopy to provide shelter from the elements on wet days. The team also built a 500sqm workshop/ servicing facility with car grooming bays, along with the 70sqm auto drive-through car wash. Bird Built’s coordinated approach on this project speaks volumes about the company’s culture, which is centred on constantly seeking improvement. “We’ve always had that flexibility and openness to review what we’re doing. We won’t necessarily do things the standard way if there’s a better way to do it. “I think this is something that comes from our building background, seeing what works and what doesn’t and being prepared to make adjustments to achieve the best results. “We have a great team who enjoy what they do and like delivering the product and we get a lot of really good feedback, including for this project.” Servicing the Canterbury region since 2015, Bird Built is well-known for quality workmanship, communication and attention to detail. The company was established by Cameron and Abby as an owner operated business. Cameron first got a taste for the building industry while on an OE in London, before returning to NZ to complete his apprenticeship and build his career in the industry. Bird Built currently employs a skilled team of seven builders, led by Cameron who provides overall project management. Abby brings her corporate background to the business, running client liaison, administration and staff development. Another recent project for Bird Built was a stunning commercial makeover in Antigua Street (Nori Table). “We’re quite heavily involved in residential work too but currently looking to specialise more in commercial work.” 0800 800 005 • skips@containerwaste.co.nz • www.containerwaste.co.nz Are proud to work with Bird Built supplying all their waste and recycling requirements Nulook Canterbury proudly supports Bird Built www.nulookcanterbury.co.nz PROUD TO SUPPORT Bird Built feel love see 58 MANDEVILLE ST, CHRISTCHURCH 03 348 0939 FLOORPRIDE.COM
