Following restructuring last year, the family-owned business has downsized its workshop, but is still operating from the same Strathallan Street premises adjacent to the inner harbour, offering a range of diagnostics, repairs and servicing for petrol and diesel light vehicles alongside its comprehensive stable of diesel services. These diesel services cover field repairs, component rebuilds and general repairs across a wide range of industries including mining, construction, road transport, civil works and marine, and on-site support in Otago and Southland, director Malcolm Thorne says. “As well as repairs and maintenance, our mechanics provide an engine component rebuild service and field repairs with a mobile truck mechanic operating throughout Otago and Southland.” Integrated Mechanics have the ability to undertake total machine overhauls including mid-life, half-life and component replacement, engine, transmission, torque converter and drivetrain hydraulic repairs including lines and cylinders, electrical repairs, rewiring and maintenance, preventative and service agreements. “We service and maintain almost anything with an engine,” Malcolm says. For clients who need urgent repairs, Integrated Mechanics have a “drop and go” policy for breakdowns. “We are more than prepared to lose weekends and nights to help fishermen and others who have to be on the road making money; we are more than flexible to get them moving.” Between them, Integrated Mechanics staff bring nearly 100 years of trade experience to their clients. Its diesel mechanics hold a National Certificate in Motor Industry Automotive Heavy Engineering or similar qualifications, and are trained in all leading machinery, including CAT, Komatsu, Hitachi, Volvo and Liebherr. The business began with Malcolm providing technical mining support, and the company has a mechanic permanently located on the West Coast working at Stockton Mine, which is part of New Zealand’s largest opencast mining operation. For Malcolm, the thrill of getting gear going has never lost its appeal and he also enjoys the “interesting characters” he meets and the relationships he and his team have been built. A challenging aspect of running the business has been the delivery of parts since the covid pandemic. Integrated Mechanics can source either OEM (original equipment manufacturer) or aftermarket parts. “The biggest things we’ve noticed with parts is the difference in freight times and availability of things that have a wee bit of age since covid. It’s been a big change.” “Replacing a complete engine or even a driveline, powertrain or hydraulic component is expensive. What’s more, new parts can be hard to source and you risk facing long lead times if they are unavailable locally and have to be shipped from overseas.” This is where the Integrated Mechancis teams skills and experience comes to the fore when a repair or rebuild may be a better option than having to wait for a part or parts.
