64 | CONTRACTING Project management breath of fresh air Adele Eyers, owner of project management company AE Projects. T T Russell Fredric AE Projects After starting her career in medical laboratory and biomedical project management related work in Southern Africa, civil project management is proving a breath of fresh air for Adele Eyers. As the sole owner of AE Projects, Adele first worked in New Zealand as a civil project manager for Hauraki District Council from 2017 to 2019 for two-and-a-half years where she gained “amazing” experience working on a wide variety of civic projects, from playgrounds to major infrastructure projects before moving to the Cromwell area. “I do projects for the likes of Central Otago District Council and Queenstown Lakes District Council and mainly concentrate on infrastructure projects such as three waters and roading.” Her penchant for the practical and the outdoors includes having undertaken part of a building apprenticeship 18 months ago. “I guess my love for projects and construction came from my dad because he had his own building company in South Africa. It’s good to have the relationship with people where you can actually relate [on a practical level].” More recently, Adele also gained a passive house certification and was the first female in New Zealand to achieve this. AE Projects services includes comprehensive project management, procurement management, contract management, engineer to the contract and tender evaluation, plus “you name it, we do it…” “My pipeline is quite full and varied, and busy.” Professional project management is vital to creating a successful outcome and to avoid or mitigate unexpected costs and delays, Adele says. “Construction is full of enough uncertainties and unknowns as it is; putting clarity and understanding into the detail of the contract, and managing the contract under the terms and conditions of the contract, is a massive risk mitigation for our clients and their projects.” AE Projects comprehensive experience led to being appointed lead project manager for the membrane plant stage of the Central Otago District Council’s $16.1 million Lake Dunstan Water Supply Project comprising major upgrades and infrastructure for a new water treatment plant for Alexandra. “My role was managing the planning, the procurement and the execution of the physical works and then the closing off of the project. The closure took at least a year. This stage included [Lake Dunstan] bore field upgrades, construction of raw water and treated water tanks, the membrane treatment plant and pipework between the treatment plant and the treated water tank. Like most projects of this nature, a considerable amount of it is underground, plus some infrastructure is in the form of cloud technology which is used for communicating data to different parties. “There’s a lot going on in a project and the amount of physical assets you can see is not always as much. All the works that are done, the majority of it’s in the ground.” The project was a great experience, Adele says, and there was excellent collaboration between the contractors, contributing businesses and CODC who viewed it and the results that would be achieved for the community with of sense mission. “It was amazing being part of the project because it was high value, there was lots of stakeholders involved, there was lots of contractors, they all worked really well together and professionally as a team.” “I guess my love for projects and construction came from my dad because he had his own building company in South Africa. It’s good to have the relationship with people where you can actually relate [on a practical level].” sales@switchbuild.co.nz | (03) 466 4281 www.switchbuild.co.nz Proud to be associated with AE Projects Ltd Power Distribution and Motor Control | Process and Control Integration INITIATION TO COMPLETION, WE MANAGE THE PROCESS, MAKING YOUR VISION A REALITY.
