T T Bernadette Cooney ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Foley Group Architecture A four bedroom plus study Cashmere home designed by a dreadlocked former contemporary sculptor turned architectural designer, has won an inaugural architectural award in acknowledgment of its elegant, sustainable design with high thermal performance. Built on a challenging steep section, the Longhurst Terrace family home has won the Superhome of the Year Award 2024 – a superbly simple but effective design from Foley Group Architecture co-director Rob d’ Auvergne. Aligned with the objectives of the Superhome Movement, an industry led group of designers, builders and consultants seeking transformative change in the New Zealand building industry by championing healthier, high performing homes - Rob’s 285 sq metre, two storey home incorporates key Superhome principles such as optimal orientation, super insulated floor, walls and roof, thermally broken and recessed windows, heat recovery ventilation and rainwater retention. “I’ve always been very passionate about sustainable design and believe in empowering and incentivising people to build better, rather than just falling back to building code minimum all the time.” The d’Auvergne family home was built by Richard Fantham of Radius Building Ltd and took 16 months to build, requiring extensive engineering co-ordination due to its steep site with criss-crossed stormwater easements. “On one side we’re dug into the ground a full storey and on the other side we’re on piles that are about a full storey high,” says Rob, “so there is quite a cross fall which required lot of planning to navigate.” The high spec traditional timber framed house features living, kitchen and three bedrooms upstairs and the downstairs features a master bedroom and study and could be completely self-contained, envisaging intergenerational living for the future. Instead of timber dwangs there is another layer of timber and insulation inside the studs to reduce thermal bridging and windows are double glazed, thermally broken and recessed into the framing. The front exterior is clad in tray profile Coloursteel and Abodo Vulcan thermally modified pine. The rear exterior is clad in Weathertex compressed hardwood timber panel, ideal for inaccessible places due to its low maintenance. Raking ceilings in living areas create a sense of interior spaciousness while large cavity sliders can close off the lounge to create a more intimate space. An ultra-low emissions fireplace allows for additional heating when required and thermal mass walls within the interior take advantage of afternoon sun to slow-release passive heat as the sun goes down. Two 5000 litre rainwater retention and detention tanks store rainwater for non-potable water use, taking pressure off the stormwater network. Described by Superhome judges as a holistic design effortlessly combining practicality with style and high performing capability, with beautifully lit and well-proportioned interior, winning the award was a pleasant surprise says Rob. “To be recognised by industry peers who I hold in high regard for their knowledge and experience is significant.” Christchurch based, Foley Group Architecture have been designing buildings, interiors and landscapes for the residential and commercial sectors for over 35 years and have particular experience in sustainability, multi- unit residential and retirement and tourism architecture.
