T T Kelly Deeks Strategically located in the heart of a fast-growing small town in a fast-growing district, Cromwell’s specialist architectural design and draughting company Scott Ede Design applies in-depth experience and local knowledge to produce dream homes which provide comfort and performance in the harsh Central Otago climate. “We know how important it is to make our customers’ dreams a reality,” Scott says. “Along with study and experience, Scott also has had hands on experience in residential and commercial construction, giving him an insight into the practical as well as the creative aspects of design. We pride ourselves on being inspirational, approachable, and above all personal in our service.” Scott says Cromwell’s reputation as a giant fruit photo stop town feeding into its more famous neighbours Queenstown and Wānaka is changing. The historic gold rush town has always been home to some of New Zealand’s most stunning scenery, and now its growing Cromwell Basin wine region and the hugely popular Lake Dunstan Cycling Trail are bringing more residents and holiday makers to Cromwell than ever before. At the heart of his approach to great design is the comfort of homeowners in this land of extreme climatic conditions. “I want my clients to be able to come home to a house that requires minimal effort to be comfortable in for all the seasons!.” he says. While everyone building in Central Otago wants to maximise their undoubtedly stunning and rugged views, their glazing is going to be the biggest barrier to energy-efficiency and thermal performance. “Tell a homeowner in Central Otago they have to have a smaller window and they don’t like it,” Scott says. “When you’ve got a bit of experience, you know how big is too big.” We can even go down the track of full thermal “Energy efficient homes generally have a pretty hefty up-front cost. Scott says the Government’s plan to lower this cost by loosening rules on imported building products creates a concern that products from overseas could handle New Zealand’s climate conditions, and its higher UV levels than the northern hemisphere. “For us to use an international product here in Central, it’s got to be able to handle -15°C and up to 35°C.” Those concerns aside, Scott says the Government’s plan will widen the scope for designers who are often brought ideas from Pinterest and Houzz.com by their clients, but couldn’t create the same in New Zealand with overseas products that weren’t allowable under the Building Act. It will also widen the scope for energy-efficient options. “Energy efficient homes generally have a pretty hefty up-front cost. If we can put competitiveness into the market for some of those items, we will bring the cost down. “It’s not an immediate fix, but it will certainly be interesting to see where the industry is in 20-years’ time. Scott Ede Design will keep evolving with the changes and keep doing our best work.” Email andrew.tall01@gmail.com Phone 021 771 570 Design & Build, Multi Room Audio Domestic, Commercial, Maintenance Proudly Supporting Scott Ede Design Scott Ede: “We know how important it is to make our customers’ dreams a reality.”
