| 89 T T Alexia Anderson Home ticks all the boxes With a six Homestar NZGBC rating, the Tahuna will be easier to keep warm and healthy, is more cost effective to run and more environmentally friendly than a home built to the current New Zealand Building Code standards. Green Homes Queenstown BUILDING Green Homes Queenstown is staying true to its name as it leads the way in sustainable living with the unveiling of a high-performing showhome at Hanley’s Farm. Late last year, Green Homes Queenstown unlocked the doors to its new showhome, the architecturally designed Tahuna plan, which boasts style, space and comfort without compromising on efficiency and sustainability. Managing director Wal Dix describes the design as a “high performing” home, built to maximise energy efficiency, sustainability, comfort and power production. “The Tahuna is designed to maximise living,” he said. The 281sqm home features an open-plan kitchen, described as a chef’s dream, making it one of the home’s main selling points. The kitchen is centrally located for easy entertaining, has a seamless connection from the living area to the outdoor patio, along with an additional media room. The two-storey Tahuna also features a spacious master bedroom, two double bedrooms and 2.5 well-appointed bathrooms. A fully self-contained one-bedroom unit is also attached, which offers extra space and potential income. The attached flat has a ‘warm roof’ system ensuring no potential condensation buildup in the roof space during the winter months. Further benefits include 20 premium German engineered solar panels, a Tesla power wall, and optimised insulation throughout, along with PVC tilt and turn windows, providing improved thermal and acoustic performance compared to aluminium windows. It also has a six Homestar NZGBC rating, meaning the Tahuna will be easier to keep warm and healthy, is more cost effective to run and more environmentally friendly than a home built to the current New Zealand Building Code standards. Wal said the Green Homes Queenstown showhome is the stand out display home across the Green Homes range. “It is the epitome of everything Green Homes stands for: quality craftsmanship, exemplary architectural design, sustainable building materials, energy efficiency, the generation of its own clean renewable energy, along with street appeal and its earthy neutral interior design and thoughtfully selected finishings, reflecting its breathtaking location.” And, as the home is also connected to the grid, excess power can be fed back once the battery is fully charged. However, some power from the grid will be required at times, particularly in the colder months and days of low sunshine hours. Wal said the concept of living in completely off-grid homes was likely to increase over time, driven by a range of factors including advancements in technology, growing environmental awareness, and changing societal values. He said while it came with higher up front costs, trends suggest it could become more accessible and affordable in the future. It would likely be led by a range of factors, including but not limited to technological advancements, economies of scale, potential government incentives, changing social norms and resilience concerns, such as risk of blackouts, natural disasters and grid failures. “It should be noted, however, that off-grid homes are essentially built to Passive Home design. Green Homes embraces elements of this in our everyday builds. However, running completely off-grid is not possible at present,” Wal said. The goal is to drive down the energy requirements for comfortable living with the budget still paramount when designing a home for a client that complements the site and their needs for the building - everything the Tahuna offers.
