BUILDING For over three decades, Jeff King Building Ltd has been at the forefront of transforming Dunedin’s architectural landscape with unparalleled expertise and craftsmanship in both residential and commercial construction. As a family-owned and operated business, they take immense pride in their contributions to the local community, continually striving to enhance the city’s infrastructure and amenities. In recent years, Jeff King Building has played a pivotal role in a major project commissioned by the Dunedin City Council. Tasked with modernising and upgrading nine elevators across municipal chambers and public facilities, demonstrating a commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions that elevate the city’s infrastructure to new heights. “We’ve been doing work for the council for a good 15 years or more and we’ve also been building contractors to Te Whatu Ora Southern for 34 years now. Plus, we’ve also done a lot of work for the university as well,” says company owner and founder Jeff King. Licensed Building Practitioners, Jeff King Building is a build team of seven including Jeff’s 2IC Andrew Beck who was his first apprentice 16 years ago, and four qualified and experienced builders, a trade assistant, and a building apprentice. The company began the city council’s lift replacements in 2022 and have completed three of the nine slated for replacement. “We’ve just completed a lift upgrade at the Edgar Centre in Portsmouth Drive, Andersons Bay and replaced two lifts at the carpark building at Moray Place.” The lift upgrades are replacing older hydraulic elevators. “They’re electric and belt driven with a much smoother ride and does away with the need for hydraulics and the big machine room required to operate them,” says Jeff. His building company facilitates all aspects of the lift upgrades from hoarding the area off, creating new entranceways and ensuring lift shaft scaffolding from top to bottom. “The lifts are from OTIS and we prepare the way for the engineers to fit the new steel lift shaft and we complete the fire stopping and co-ordinate switchboard upgrades.” In 2023, Jeff King Building Ltd completed an upgrade of Tahuna Park and stadium in time to host FIFA Women’s World Cup matches. “We completed an extensive upgrade of training facilities, change rooms and ablution areas inside the stadium and upgraded a stadium seating area within a tight timeframe. Within Dunedin Hospital, Jeff King Building has been contracted to complete numerous upgrades and installations over the years including building the new children’s ward in 2013, upgrading five operating theatres and building a new one for the Queen Mary birthing unit, and installing new MRI machines and CT scanners. Despite a career-altering injury in 2017, Jeff’s passion for construction remains undiminished. Transitioning from hands-on work to overseeing operations, he continues to lead by example, drawing upon his vast experience having started in the trades in 1976. “I started an apprenticeship with Seddon & Sons fibrous plasterers,” says Jeff, “then worked there for eight years before I moved on to begin my building apprenticeship with Gray Brothers Builders, Keith and Murray.” Proudly associated with Jeff King Building Ltd Dunedin - Ph: 03 477 1999 Proudly Suppor ting Jef f King Building Ltd Transport Ltd • General Cartage • Trombone Trailer • Container & Artic Work • Fly Jib • Crane Trucks with Winches & Man Bucket
