BUILDING High-spec showhome an award entry T T Russell fredric Platinum Homes Otago In a market with numerous competitors, Platinum Homes Otago’s niche is offering a higher level of specification that would be charged as extras by some companies, franchisee Tim Rutherford says. “If a client shows us a build contract they think is comparing apples and apples and the other contract is less, we always find our level of specification to be higher.” Nationally, Platinum Homes has worked with specialist architects and with its supply chain to create a range of home designs that are not just beautiful homes, but are designed with construction efficiencies in mind. Platinum Homes works with all build budgets, regardless of whether the client is looking for a house and land package with a design already planned for the site, or a fully bespoke home design. “Our team don’t try and fit them in a box, they take the time to work with them, get to know them, to be able to build a house around the things that matter most to them.” Examples of Platinum Homes normal inclusions in its standard plans are quality brands that include the likes of Smeg kitchen appliances, soft close kitchen drawers, stone benchtops, Methven tapware and premium floor covering underlays. Platinum Homes Otago’s show home, in 33 Cemetery Road Mosgiel, is being entered into this year’s Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. “You’ve got to be pretty confident if you’re wanting all your peers to judge you. You’ve got to be pretty confident in your level of quality and finish. We don’t do anything special in the show home, it is the same. Any home that we design will be finished to the same level.” It was a Registered Master Builders member with considerable industry experience who strongly urged Tim to enter the home. Based on the Waipapa plan which has a monopitch roof, the show home certainly exudes style and finesse in its interior design which features a bright clean, contrasting European style colour palette and cabinetry in the kitchen, with feature walls adding colour in some other rooms including the lounge. Although the home presents what appears to be a modestly sized frontage, at 225 square metres it is deceptively spacious. “People are very surprised; it’s quite a clever design and it’s dimensions are quite good where it sits. Sections nowadays are getting smaller and smaller.” The Waipapa plan has three bedrooms, with the master having an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, a study/office, a separate lounge off the kitchen with cavity sliders, a walk-in pantry and a double garage. Three skylights over the raked ceiling in the dining area let in a lot of natural light and the glossy white splashback tiles behind the range area are an instant eye-catcher. The show home’s exterior has a combination of vertical Linea Oblique and horizontal Linea shiplapped weatherboard, while a vertical column clad in schist, while the south elevation has brick. Tim describes this combination as a smart way to build, taking into account aesthetics, durability and the cost of each material. Platinum Homes Otago provides free colour consultancy with each house package. Tim owns and runs Platinum Homes Otago with his wife Coyla. They previously owned an interior linings company, but seven years ago when the Otago franchise became available saw it as a great opportunity to become involved with a national company that had much to offer. The franchise covers a large area which, in consenting terms, relates to the Gore, Clutha, Waitaki and Waimate district councils.
