BUILDING DRH Building Ltd of Christchurch has entered a recent new build in Papanui into this year’s Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards. Showcasing everything the company is known for, including its refined craftsmanship and thoughtful detailing, this Matsons Avenue, single-level architectural build, with its crisp, clean aesthetic and well considered functionality, is a strong contender. Licensed building practitioner and company owner Daniel Hubber says he will find out at awards night in July how he got on. This isn’t Dan’s first brush with building acclaim. In 2019, he entered a Halswell home into the Master Builders awards and walked away with a Gold Award, Category Winner, and a Top 100 spot nationwide. “We’re not the type to chase awards, but when you put the work in and the detailing is tight, it’s nice to see it recognised,” he says. The Matsons Ave project replaces a quake-damaged, century-old home with a 240sqm, four-bedroom, two-bathroom, modern family residence. Architecturally designed by Johnstone Callaghan Architects, the home is defined by its careful material selection. American red oak detailing, and its brick and timber exterior cladding and tray roofing give it a distinctive appeal. “It has cedar and macrocarpa features. Some exposed beams on the entry and with some cedar panelling, tray roofing and minimalist detail on flashings – it really looks quite smart,” says Dan. “There’s a large skylight lined with red oak, and all the interior trim and ceiling features are all timber highlights. We handcrafted the timber features on-site.” The home is also equipped with modern essentials – a large open-plan living area, and an outdoor entertaining space with a built-in barbecue area. DRH Building Ltd was established in 2012, and Dan’s wife Melanie, with a background in accounting, runs the financial side of the family-owned-and-operated business. Together, she and Dan have built a company grounded in trust, repeat work, and word of mouth referrals. “Most of our work is word of mouth,” says Dan. “It comes from relationships. We’ve worked with the same sparkies and plumbers for over a decade. That kind of continuity really shows in the finished product.” While Matsons Ave is the current showpiece, it’s far from the only noteworthy project. DRH Building is also finishing a two-storey home in Bryndwr, the second on a subdivided site originally developed by the same client. DRH Building also has ongoing renovation work in Cashmere. “We’re currently modernising a 1970s’ home with an extension, full exterior joinery updates, cedar re-clad exterior, and putting in a giant swim spa and nice deck area.” There’s also community work, like the recent repairs and renovation at the New Apostolic Church on Wairakei Road, and ongoing improvements at Living Springs Camp at Governors Bay. “We are renovating a staff house and accommodation blocks. They’re lovely people to work with, too.” With its strength of reputation, extensive portfolio and another potential award on the horizon, DRH Building Ltd is firmly established as one of Christchurch’s most trusted custom home builders.
