The process has been good for us, and our team really enjoys it.” BUILDING Over the past few years, J Moore Construction has firmly established itself as a key player in Christchurch’s multi-unit residential construction sector, and is now nearing completion of an 11-unit, single-bedroom townhouse development on Madras Street, a project that highlights the company’s expertise in high-quality, efficient builds. Having specialised in multi-unit construction for the past five to six years, J Moore Construction has refined its approach to meet the demands of the sector. “We came in just as the multi-unit boom was starting,” says owner Jed Moore. “It’s a bit different from traditional building, but not too different. The process has been good for us, and our team really enjoys it.” A key advantage of working on multi-unit projects is the opportunity they provide for apprentices. J Moore Construction’s workforce includes 15 builders, five of whom are apprentices. “The repetitive nature of multi-unit construction is great for training,” Jed says. “It allows our apprentices to really hone their skills, get their required work signed off quickly, and gain hands-on experience in a structured environment.” While J Moore Construction is now primarily focused on townhouses, the company has an extensive background in various types of construction. “We build pretty much anything. In the past, we’ve done a lot of rural buildings, insurance work, renovations, you name it. “But now, we’ve positioned ourselves as one of the go-to teams for townhouse developments.” One of the company’s strengths lies in its ability to complete multi-unit projects efficiently. “Townhouses need to be built quickly, and we have a strong network of subcontractors, who are highly experienced in the multi-unit process. “There’s an easy way and a hard way to get through the required steps, from managing workflows, to maintaining quality, and booking inspections. We focus on doing things the right way.” Despite the company’s successes, the Madras St project has not been without challenges. One of the biggest obstacles has been parking. “Since these townhouses don’t have designated parking spaces, and we’re in the central city, parking is at a premium,” Jed says. “Access was tricky, but we managed to create some temporary on-site parking, and the neighbours have been really accommodating, allowing us to use their spaces from time to time.” The success of the project is due in part to strong collaboration with key stakeholders. “The developer has been fantastic to work with,” Jed says. “We’ve collaborated before, and he’s always been great. The architectural design by Kelly Rush has also been a huge asset. We’ve worked with Kelly on multiple projects, and having that established relationship makes a big difference. We can exchange ideas without friction, which leads to better results.” For Jed and his team, the final product is what truly matters. “Not all projects turn out as well as they could, and sometimes design choices can affect the outcome. But on this one, our team is really proud of the result.” As the Madras St project nears completion, Jed expresses thanks to all those involved. “This site has had its challenges, but everyone has put in the effort. The job itself is straightforward, but the site conditions made it tricky. But thanks to a dedicated team, we’re almost there.” do it once, do it right plastered to perfection 022 177 6416 admin@perfectionplasterers.co.nz www.perfectionplasterers.co.nz • Licensed applicator of lightweight concrete panel • Polystyrene, brick and block plastering • New and existing homes • Repairs and repaints www.azapelectrical.co.nz Proudly Supporting J Moore Construction
