SJ Allen Holdings Managing waste with a sustainability focus T T Aimee Wilson CONTRACTING The SJ Allen Holdings journey is a story of steady growth, smart investments, and a deep commitment to the communities it serves across Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago. Simon and Lisa Spark purchased the waste management business in 2000 (SJ Allen Wakatipu), which at the time operated with just three trucks. Fast forward 25 years, and SJ Allen Holdings has a branch in Frankton and Alexandra servicing right across Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes with an expanded fleet of 23 trucks and an impressive range of services. “Our move into Central Otago was a natural step as demand grew in the region. We officially set up our Alexandra branch in 2016, when we purchased SJ Allen Central Otago and formed SJ Allen Holdings,” business manager Charley Spark says. Sustainability is front and centre of what they do, and as the company has grown, they have made a conscious effort to learn, adapt, and invest in better ways to manage waste responsibly. “That means staying open to new ideas, exploring alternative disposal and reuse options, and making sure our practices reflect both environmental responsibility and long-term thinking,” she says. With Simon celebrating a 25-year milestone in business this year, one of the things he is most proud of is seeing how far the business has come – from just three trucks and one operator to a fleet of 23 trucks and a strong team of 15. “It’s been a hands-on journey built on hard work, and a commitment to doing the job right. We wouldn’t be where we are today without our loyal customers,” Simon says. He is still often found out delivering portaloos for events, and every now and then, behind the wheel of a vacuum tanker or jetting a culvert, doing the work alongside his crew. Queenstown is consistently busy year round, with ongoing demand from tourism, construction, and infrastructure projects. The company supports major events such as the Gibbston Valley concert and the Queenstown Marathon with a range of services. “We work closely with event organisers making sure the right services are in place, compliance requirements are met, and everything runs smoothly from set-up to pack down. We focus on building strong relationships with organisers, so they know they can rely on us year after year,” says Simon. In Alexandra and Central Otago, the company experiences more seasonal peaks, especially during the fruit-growing season, providing specialised waste management solutions for the wine industry. In 2005, SJ Allen acquired a company called Jettech, bringing hydro-jetting capability into the business. That was a key step in expanding services to include drain and culvert cleaning with high-pressure jetting. In 2007, the purchase of Daiken’s Waste Solutions marked SJ Allen’s move into general waste collection and solidified its role in broader waste management. The company has even invested in its own consented land for waste disposal, approved by the Otago Regional Council. “To stay compliant, we work with LEI to handle all our reporting and environmental monitoring. “The waste we manage is organic, and by applying it to land under strict consent conditions, we’re able to keep it out of landfill in a sustainable way. This is particularly relevant for wineries seeking sustainable waste management solutions,” Charley says. Specialists in Accounting, Tax, Audit, Xero and more.
