NZ Trucks is one of the country’s bestequipped and busiest heavy transport service providers, operating from a large, purpose-built facility in Hornby South. Since relocating from its former Blenheim Road site in 2017, the company has become not only one of the most capable workshops in New Zealand, but also one of the largest. The move to 6 Brydone Rd allowed for significant expansion in staffing, facilities, and services. With a 24/7 emergency breakdown service, full-service mechanical workshop, on-site auto electricians, COF testing, and a comprehensive transport engineering division, NZ Trucks has firmly established itself as a one-stop-shop for truck owners and operators across the South Island. Its wide-ranging services are delivered by a skilled team of heavy diesel technicians, apprentices, auto electricians, lube bay specialists, and transport engineers, supported by a tight-knit administrative crew, who keep operations running smoothly. Director John Mason says the current transport landscape is unusually mixed, with some businesses flat out, while others are noticeably quieter. “There’s no real rhyme or reason to it,” he says. “It depends who people are carting for. Some sectors are down, especially retail, and that’s flowing through to transport operators and contractors. “For us, it means more quoting, tighter margins, and increased pressure on operations. But we’re still busy.” John, who began his career as an apprentice with International Harvester in 1984, has spent more than four decades working in the transport industry, rising through the ranks to service manager roles, and eventually taking on ownership in 2019 alongside fellow industry stalwarts Ross Graham and Sheldon Close. Together, the trio saw the potential to elevate the capabilities of NZ Trucks and support an increasingly complex and demanding sector. With nearly 60 staff, including more than 30 experienced heavy diesel mechanics, NZ Trucks provides service to a broad customer base, including national fleet operators, contractors, owner-drivers, and even RV owners. The company has longstanding ties with Iveco, and is the Central Canterbury service agent for the brand, offering factory-trained technicians, full diagnostic capabilities, and access to the latest parts and tools. The team also services and repairs all other major makes and models of trucks, trailers, and industrial engines, giving customers the confidence that whatever they bring in, NZ Trucks can handle it. “We’ve always focused on taking a problem off the customer’s hands and giving them back a solution,” John says. “The goal is to get them back on the road as quickly and reliably as possible, because that’s when they’re earning.” The Hornby facility includes two full-length lube bays, one with in-ground brake rollers, and a dedicated engine and transmission rebuild workshop. An on-site, independently operated COF and WOF testing lane streamlines compliance for customers, with pre-checks and repairs available before testing.
