Gary McCormick Transport Ltd TRANSPORT With more than a thousand skips dotted throughout the Mid-Canterbury region, Gary McCormick Transport is a major contributor to the refuse and waste disposal sector with half a dozen specialised trucks and a new Hino front-loader under construction. Based in Tinwald, Ashburton, the company is still owned and run by Gary McCormick, who founded it in 1990, though Gary no longer gets behind the wheel. Rubbish bin hire and servicing is the company’s main revenue earner, offering open-top skips, cardboard cages, gantry bins and front-loader and green waste drums to its highly diversified range of clients. “The new Hino front-loader will join two others when it’s finished, and we also have an Isuzu and a Nissan, both trucks fitted with Hiabs for open-top bins, an Isuzu for gantry bins and another for drums,” Gary says. “We don’t have a preferred truck brand, but have been very well served by the Hino, Isuzu and Nissan trucks we operate. “I started the business with just two D1000 Fords with Hiabs, and over the subsequent 35 years it’s grown steadily along with the Mid-Canterbury region.” Gary McCormick Transport is based in Bryant Street premises covering about 3200sqm, and has a staff of six, including three full-time drivers and a couple of others, who can be called in as necessary. Local businesses, farmers and householders provide the bulk of the company’s custom, while the trucks are serviced by local companies, including AIS, ACL and Ashburton Engineering. “Over the years we’ve been able to nurture a true local identity for our services, and gradually expanded to suit the evolving market,” Gary says. “As well as commissioning the new Hino, we’re also in the process of starting to do our own cardboard pressing, part of our strategy of expanding our customer base as the opportunities arise. “The Mid-Canterbury economy has proved particularly resilient against the recent forces of recession, as the farming industry, in particular, benefits from a sudden surge in prices for everything from meat to wool. “That spins off into our skip business quite directly: when the farmers are spending, so are the other businesses in the region, most of which are dependent to some degree on our core agricultural industries.” The domestic sector is also growing with more people moving into the area, creating greater demand for the company’s household rubbish bin hire service, while its skips are in demand in the country as much as the town. Growth was particularly strong in 2023-24, mirroring the strength of the wider Canterbury region, and while Mid-Canterbury is not quite the fastest-growing district there, it’s still pushing its own population towards the 40,000 mark. Most of the growth has been centred round Ashburton, but the region’s other towns – Methven, Rakaia, Mount Somers, Mayfield and Hinds – are also showing signs of growth.
