One example is the stunning transformation that has breathed new life into the Elmwood Park Bowling Club, a long-cherished part of the community that after years of wear and tear, exacerbated by the Christchurch earthquakes, was in desperate need of revitalisation. When approached by the Elmwood Park Bowling Club, Jason Walker and his team knew they had an opportunity to create something special – a facility that would serve not only bowlers, but also a wider audience for events and gatherings. Jason and his team worked closely with a dedicated build committee from Elmwood Bowling Club, ensuring the project met the club’s needs, while also aligning with modern architectural best practices. “There are a lot of different people involved in any club project, so we recommended they set up a build committee of six people to act as a filter,” Jason says. “We worked with them very intensively and set up a relationship that allowed information to flow freely between us and them.” The result is a beautifully designed, low-maintenance facility that has quickly become a hub for community events. “Seeing people enjoy this space, whether for bowls or special occasions, is the most rewarding part,” Jason says. “We wanted to give them a place that feels welcoming and modern, while respecting the club’s heritage.” A major focus of the project was to provide a building for the next generation. While traditionally associated with older generations, bowls is increasingly attracting younger players, thanks to the efforts of clubs like Elmwood Park in engaging with youth and promoting the sport’s accessibility and entertainment value. “This new building had to be both enduring, and attractive to the younger generation,” Jason says. The materials selected, including extensive glazing and copper elements, ensure minimal maintenance, allowing club members to focus on enjoying the space rather than worrying about upkeep. Sustainability was another key consideration. The building was strategically oriented to maximise natural light, reducing energy consumption. Large overhangs provide shade during the summer while allowing sunlight in to warm the interior in winter. Plans are also underway to install solar panels, further enhancing the facility’s energy efficiency. While the club remains a premier venue for competitive and social bowls, its versatility extends far beyond the sport. The main bar area, designed with flexibility in mind, can be transformed into a space for indoor bowls, or be reconfigured for large events. Historic memorabilia, trophies, and photographs are prominently displayed, preserving the club’s rich history while embracing its future. The new venue also caters to corporate and non-profit organisations, offering a modern meeting room equipped with interactive technology and reliable WiFi. From milestone celebrations to business seminars, Elmwood Park Bowling Club is now a go-to destination for a variety of events, all with a link to lawn bowls. The project’s success is a testament to the collaborative approach taken by Walker Architecture and its partners, including Beattie Air Conditioning, who played a crucial role in designing an efficient climate-control system. Jason says strong partnerships like these are key to achieving seamless project execution. This isn’t the first time Walker Architecture has delivered a standout community project. From the redevelopment of the Richmond Club in 2018 to now working on a new city campus for Grace Vineyard Church, Walker Architecture has the ability to create spaces that stand the test of time, while welcoming new generations through the doors.
