Brown and Geary Builders love the challenge of an architectural build, which at the same time offers learning opportunities for the youngsters on the team. Since he started his apprenticeship in Arrowtown, Hamish Geary has worked in the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago area for many years, and is now helping bring the next generation through. Employing a mix of both experienced carpenters and apprentices, he also offers work experience to high school students through the Gateway programme, investing in the future of the construction industry. “The more you put in the best you will get out of them,” Hamish says. Originally from Southland, after he moved to Arrowtown as a teenager Hamish was given great opportunities to work on some exciting projects, such as Millbrook Resort, learning from good people and on the best jobs as he worked his way up in the industry. “I had a really good apprenticeship with a good variety of work, and so I just want to give back.” He can still be found on the tools demonstrating a high standard of workmanship, but every job is a team effort, and the team is his biggest asset. As he puts it: “You have to lead from the front.” Hamish works closely with architects and engineers at the early stages of the build, which helps to identify any potential problems or challenges that may occur. Most of the company’s work is through word of mouth, “and there’s nothing more satisfying than finishing a job on time and on budget with happy clients,” he says. While specialising in high-end builds, Brown and Geary Builders works on all types of residential houses, small and large-scale renovations, and commercial projects as well. “We still love building the humble home, and the team is currently working on a commercial shed.” Another current project is a 350sqm energy-efficient SIPS panel house in Cromwell’s Scott Terrace, with waterfront and mountain views. This is the second SIPS panel house Hamish has built in Cromwell, and it also features Accoya cladding, stone walls and columns, with purple heart internal exposed trusses. “This was a very challenging steel and timber structure and was extremely rewarding when it was closed in.” The home comes complete with triple-glazed centrafix aluminium windows and doors, and other energy-efficient features such as solar panels and a return air system, making it low maintenance and eco-friendly. “The owners put their own stamp on it with the design, using sentimental timbers, which 027 553 5405 grant@wildroosterdesign.co.nz WRD Architectural Design Creating Spaces to Live, Work, Learn, Entertain & Create.
