Harrold Building - sScott Ede Design T T Aimee Wilson BUILDING A holiday home in Bannockburn designed by Scott Ede and built by Michael Harrold pays homage to materials used by early settlers in the gold-mining era. The two have worked closely on many projects together, and have already clocked up an impressive six collaborations this year alone in Central Otago. The Bannockburn clients are a family with growing children, and eventually will make their holiday home a permanent one, so the design also had to accommodate for when they become empty-nesters. “Making the most of the views and the Central Otago landscape was important to them. Being able to entertain in various parts of the house depending on weather, and also being able to shut down parts of the house when only two people are living there,” Scott says. With the home being located on exposed hillside that can be affected by extreme weather, designing sheltered alternative outdoor areas was a high consideration. Views from this impressive holiday home are 360 degrees, looking east to the Dunstan Range, north over Cromwell and Lake Dunstan, and with the Pisa Range in behind. To the west is the Kawarau Gorge and south is the Nevis Range, with the overall design loosely based on pavilions that replicate old huts and lodges that were once scattered throughout the landscape back in the day. Timber weatherboards mixed with natural stone and metal make up the cladding around the house, to give it a truly authentic look. Scott founded Scott Ede Design in 2011, and the practice blends his extensive industry experience with a personal approach to every project he’s involved with.
