BUILDING Greymouth-based Inscope Building Services is making waves in light commercial construction across the West Coast, with a growing portfolio of complex and heritage inner-city renovation projects that showcase the company’s capability, craftsmanship, and commitment to doing things right. Led by Rhys Devlin, a builder with more than 20 years of experience and a strong foundation in heritage-home restoration, Inscope is now reaping the benefits of steady business growth and smart investments in systems, training, and client experience. “Things are definitely picking up again in 2025,” Rhys says. “We’re getting back on track and hearing the same from other trades around here.” While Greymouth’s CBD may appear quiet, Rhys is quick to point out that the shop fronts don’t tell the full story. “The town centre might look a bit tired, but there’s actually a lot happening behind the scenes, including renovations, upgrades, and new projects across the region.” A standout example of Inscope’s capabilities is the recently completed seismic strengthening of a historical building in Greymouth’s CBD, originally constructed in 1890. During renovations in the 1960s and 1980s, other tradespeople had left their names on a wall uncovered by Inscope, and the team proudly added their names to the list before sealing the wall back up. “It’s a nice way to become part of the building’s history,” Rhys says. “The previous renovators had done a great job, and we took it to the next level.” Inscope’s light commercial division is gaining serious traction, with recent wins including a significant contract for the renovation and extension of the Moana fire station. The project involves the construction of two new bays for fire appliances, and the work will keep the team busy on site for about 12 weeks. Rhys says the shift into more challenging commercial projects has been a strategic one. “I wanted to get into a space where fewer people operate: complex jobs, often with heritage or technical elements. That’s where my background gives us a real edge.” His early career spent restoring historic homes in Nelson laid the groundwork for Inscope’s growing reputation in heritage-sensitive renovations across the West Coast. Access issues and tight sites are common challenges for inner-city projects, but for Rhys, they are opportunities to grow. “Every time you come across a new problem means you’re moving forward. That’s how we improve.” Behind the scenes, Rhys credits business development support from The Professional Builder (TPB) for helping take Inscope from a sole-trader operation to a systems-driven company delivering larger-scale work. “There’s no real training in the building trade on how to grow a business, so TPB has shown us the way. It’s all about having the right systems and the team that can run them.” Now, with a detailed client onboarding process, a 287-point quality-assurance checklist, and regular promotions like the recent 1% referral programme, Inscope is focused on building trust and strong relationships. “Before we even meet a client, we send them a welcome pack with all the information about who we are, how we work, and examples of our projects,” says Rhys. “By the time we sit down together, they already know who we are and we’ve got our first foot in the door.” Need a plumbing service or some advice?
