Hawkeswood Mining is continuing to build momentum at its Millers Flat operation in Central Otago, with ongoing developments reflecting steady growth, diversification and a commitment to both the environment and local community. Since restarting its large-scale dredging operation, the company has met key production targets while progressing broader regional commitments. General Manager Simon Johnstone says the operation is delivering on its early expectations. “We’ve achieved the production we set out to deliver,” he says. “At the same time, we’ve followed through on our rehabilitation commitments including extensive planting projects. Our goal is for the land to ultimately return to productive arable pasture, excluding the quarry footprint.” Of the 69-hectare site approximately 15 hectares have already been mined with six to seven hectares successfully restored back to grass. Environmental work has included significant native planting undertaken along Tima Burn Creek in line with consent requirements. “We’ve planted around 3,200 native plants along the creek banks. That work is a key part of ensuring long-term environmental outcomes,” says Simon. One of the most significant developments is the company’s move into aggregate production, utilising material that would otherwise be discarded. “With our existing quarry consent we’re now in a position to produce and sell crushed aggregate. The next step is bringing crushers on site and commencing production.” The aggregates will be supplied to both public and commercial markets, including roading contractors, helping meet growing demand for high-quality, locally sourced materials. The initiative builds on the expertise of Hawkeswood Civil Ltd, the company’s Auckland-based parent company, with production expected to begin later this year. Exploration activity is also expanding beyond the current mining footprint. This continued growth is already translating into increased employment. The Millers Flat operation currently employs 28 staff on site supported by a further 10 personnel in Alexandra across engineering and laboratory divisions. Future consenting approvals could see the workforce expand to approximately 50 employees. The planned quarry development is also expected to create further employment opportunities. Contractor partnerships have also played a vital role in the operation’s success. “For example, Top Spec Engineering has been with us since before operations began. It has been instrumental in supporting our engineering requirements and we’ve built a strong working relationship.” As its business grows, Hawkeswood Mining has also prioritised community engagement, hosting public meetings and regular drop-in sessions to keep residents informed and involved.
