Starting in 2018, Harward and Son launched with a major project to design and build the seismic bracing for an ageing Christchurch boiler house and chimney, before expanding its services to include civil, structural and mechanical projects throughout the country. “We both enjoy variety and challenge, and have the tools and skills in-house to cater for an ever-changing scope of work, giving us the ability to offer fast and efficient results,” David says. “Once we’ve tackled the initial consulting and design stage, modelling exactly what the client wants, we’re able to move quickly into building the final product. I “In addition to our plant and asset rebuilds, we often design and build asset and reliability maintenance programmes that may include asset tagging, 3D scanning and as-built drawings. “Reputation and consistent quality are our team’s hallmarks, as shown by our national award from the NZ Defence Force for ‘Best Initiative by a Contractor’, demonstrating how a small family business can positively impact a big organisation.” David completed his fabricating and machining training with Easteel in Dannevirke in the 1980s, winning the NZ Institute of Welders’ A-grade welder and the Wellington Manufacturers Association’s awards. He and wife, Jeanette, started their first company, Harward Engineering, spending a decade designing and building trucks, trailers, structural steelwork, dairy sheds and working on a myriad of custom projects that earned them an enviable reputation for quality and customer service. At 36, David sold the company and took his family of five to Canada, where for nearly 20 years he worked throughout North America managing companies in the oil, precision CNC manufacturing, and baggage and bulk fertiliser handling systems. In 2017, Easteel, then owned by Australian company RCR Tomlinson, called David back to manage the Dannevirke plant with 40 staff, only to see the parent company fold after 18 months. Matthew, meantime, had returned from Canada to join the NZ Army, serving and earning decorations in both New Zealand and Sinai. Having seen all sides of business and corporate life, David then grabbed the opportunity to go into business with his son. “Getting back on the tools after almost 20 years was interesting, and the greatest privilege is getting to work with my son every day,” David says. The company offers turnkey solutions from design to final delivery, with the pair turning their skills and equipment to maintaining a high level of quality, reliability, and on-time, on-budget controls. “We’ve also earned a reputation in sensitive and restorative work, from classic large trucks from around the country to Hythe target systems, large museum displays, and historic building certification – the latest being shoring up an historic goldmine tunnel.” Father and son are supported in the business by Jeanette, who has more than 32 years’ professional management experience, and by Matthew’s wife, Abby, who handles the Health & Safety responsibilities.
