Nayland Scaffold Gold standard in decking The company specialises in the design and construction of exterior living spaces. T T Rosa Watson Scaffolding made easy T T Hugh de Lacy For nearly 40 years, Nayland Scaffold has been setting the industry standards in the South Island in just about every category of scaffold erection, but its particular specialties are in marine and bridge construction. Nelson-based Nayland Scaffold’s highly versatile team is able to erect scaffolds on or around just about any part of a vessel on land or sea, with particular skills in delivering masts and anchor hulls, stern scaffolding and shrink-wrapping of entire ships. The company also has more than 250 completed bridge projects behind it, many featuring its ability to close in its sites with either shrink-wrap or scrim for situations like asbestos removal, closed-in blasting, and containment of work in built-up areas. “Sourcing and erecting scaffolding can be a challenging process for building and marine sites alike, so we endeavour to make the process as stress-free as possible for our clients,” says Nayland Scaffold’s co-owner Jonny Benbow. “We deliver the whole package – delivery, erection and disassembly – across the marine and construction markets, whether it’s for a new residential or commercial build, a bridge or a renovation or home maintenance. “Another popular service we offer is scaffolding for grandstand seating, stages for the likes of concerts, television towers, and installation and removal of safety nets on residential and commercial sites. For more than 10 years, The Decking Guys have been creating striking outdoor areas, constructing high-quality decks that are built to last. Operating since 2015, the company specialises in the design and construction of exterior living spaces. The dedicated team of highly skilled tradesmen and contractors pride themselves on providing individual innovative design, the highest standards of workmanship and best materials to produce a striking end product. It started out as two builders wanting to bring higher quality to the post-quake re-build in the region, director Zac Lauder says. They wanted to step into the outdoor space and create a name for themselves based on quality and speed of delivery to homes across Canterbury, he says. Today, The Decking Guys employs eight fulltime staff, with two of its employees starting with the company as apprentices and now working full-time as fully qualified builders in the roles of foreman and safety officer. Zac says what sets The Decking Guys apart from the others is the high level of quality and the timely delivery of its projects, and the materials it uses. “Nelson itself has a lot of demand for these services, but we can deliver them anywhere round the South Island, though most of our work comes from the Tasman, Marlborough and West Coast regions.” The company’s main base is at its yard in Stoke, which features a workshop facility and a huge range of scaffolding equipment and systems. It operates its own trucks and transport fleet, and employs a growing team of scaffolders, apprentices and support staff, backed by a strong leadership team. “We’re committed to supporting local employment, apprenticeships and regional growth, while working closely with local contractors, suppliers and related organisations,” Jonny says. “We’re committed to developing and maintaining a highly trained, experienced and motivated workforce that is suitably supervised and managed at all times.” Nayland Scaffold was established by the Kidson family as part of their Kidson Construction company, but was later carved off as its own entity. Justin Candish and Jonny bought it in 2019, Jonny having been involved in the scaffolding industry for more than 20 years, and he became a major contributor to the company’s growth and reputation. Jonny serves as managing director, with Justin as a director, and they operate in a market that Jonny says is steady across the upper South Island with ongoing demand in the commercial, residential and maintenance sectors, despite wider economic pressures and rising construction costs. The company also has more than 250 completed bridge projects “(We ensure) all our subframe and foundations are constructed in accordance with the New Zealand 3604 building code. “Our no compromise approach to the quality of workmanship and materials used beneath the surface of every deck includes stainless steel fixings and Sg8 timber subframing, to name just a few of the things that we use that most people will never see other decking companies use.” The longevity of the structure is a priority for The Decking Guys, and the company uses the best- available materials, such as H5 treated piles and stainless steel fixings. This, combined with highly skilled tradesmen, means a quality product is guaranteed. Decks have become a must-have feature of a home, and The Decking Guys takes their role in providing this seriously. “Decks have always been a desirable option for most homeowners to use to enhance their outdoor areas, and they are always a guaranteed option to add value to any property, as they provide an outdoor entertainment experience for anyone who steps on to them,” Zac says. The team can build any kind of deck, including multi-level decks with inset spas and retractable roofing, often on properties with difficult access and steep sections.
