When Ruben Fry decided to move out of building into real estate, it made sense for Tom Fitzsimmons and Stein Schreiber-Zwart, who had been working with Ruben for several years, to carry on their combined legacy by taking over R Fry Builders late in 2025, renaming it Legacy Builders Tasman. Tom had worked with Ruben before going to build in Australia, and worked with him again for a further six years on his return. Stein started his apprenticeship with Ruben 10 years ago and never left. Together, Tom and Stein intend to continue the commitment to people and quality workmanship that has repeatedly won Master Builder awards. “We want to keep doing the high-quality bespoke builds that Ruben and R Fry Builders were known for,” says Tom. “We’re maintaining the same high standards we had when we were working together, achieving the highest level of craftsmanship with the same focus on efficiency.” Whether the client has a section and is looking to discuss ideas, already has a concept and is looking towards more detailed planning, or comes with consented plans ready to go, the team at Legacy Builders Tasman works closely with them to achieve their dream home efficiently, but without sacrificing quality. A recent successful, 350sqm Nelson build involved first slightly rotating the house on the site to better capture the views and sunshine while gaining more shelter from the prevailing wind. “We’re maintaining the same high standards we had when we were working together, achieving the highest level of craftsmanship with the same focus on efficiency.” To help avoid delays and keep within budget, the original cladding selections were revised to a more cost-effective and readily available combination of materials. “We focused the premium finishes around the outdoor living areas, where they could be most appreciated, as well as at the front entrance to create a strong first impression on arrival,” says Tom. “We also ensured the entire home was wheelchair friendly and fully accessible, which the family have been thrilled with,” he says. Along with their new builds and renovations, Legacy Builders Tasman fills in any scheduling gaps with smaller renovations, decks, and fences. They keep their schedule full to ensure they are not filling in time anywhere they don’t need to be. The family-run business works closely with an independent quantity surveyor when they are estimating and quoting jobs in order to achieve a high degree of accuracy along with a quick turnaround. They not only estimate materials, but also allocate time for sub-trades and allow for weather contingencies and other variables. Tom and Stein work with the same subtrades that over the years they have found to be of like mind, with the same attention to detail, the same drive to deliver on time and on budget, and the same respect for the clients as they have.
