C hoosing your builder wisely and knowing where your building budget can make a difference is a key piece of advice from Invercargill-based builder Jeremy Skeggs. The owner of Jeremy Skeggs Building bases this advice on over 25 years in the trade and 13 years as the owner of his business. He highlights that renovations can be espe- cially challenging. “Alterations are way more tricky than doing a new build so pick your builder wisely. “You don’t know until you open things up what you find sometimes, and you’ve got to match things in and make it right.” Jeremy Skeggs Building is a member of Mas- ter Builders which not only is an assurance of peace-of-mind and the quality of workman- ship, but work can be protected by a Master Build 10-Year Guarantee. As a small business with two staff, Jeremy’s clients deal directly with him throughout the building process. This can be right from the design stage to completion, but some clients even contact him for advice when considering a land purchase. “The house we are building right now, I met with the client before they purchased the section, and we ran a laser level over it for heights. I also organised to get the soil checked for good ground bearing, so we knew what we were in for, whether we needed an engineer’s report or whether it was standard foundations.” Jeremy Skeggs Building is happy to under- take work of any size, from bathroom and kitchen renovations to new builds, reinforc- ing Jeremy’s philosophy that every project matters. “Small jobs can also lead to big jobs. If you turn the small one away, that might lead to a house build one day, or they know somebody who they will give a word-of-mouth referral to,” he says. Russell Fredric The Invercargill residential construction market remains buoyant in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis, with renovations a popular option for those who have surplus cash as a result of not being able to travel overseas. “We are actually struggling to get showers and other materials to do with bathrooms, kitchens and laundries.” Jeremy says there are ways to add spe- cial touches to a new house build without over-stretching the budget. One example is a 200 square metre holiday home built in Te Anau which has three main bedrooms plus a loft bedroom over the ga- rage which is accommodated in the roof’s 30 degree pitch. The exterior is clad in Hebel, a lightweight autoclaved aerated concrete panel which is highly thermally efficient and has a plaster finish. The client, Jeremy’s sister, wanted simple, clean lines with plenty of full height glazing to take in the mountain views. Inside, the high ceiling in the lounge and kitchen with timber-look tongue and groove ceilings allows for a tremendous sense of light and spaciousness. “It’s got a high-end kitchen in it with polished concrete floors. There’s lots of little features that enhance the design. “It’s just a matter of spending the money in the right places. You’ve got to be cautious about where you spend the money.” “Small jobs can also lead to big jobs. If you turn the small one away, that might lead to a house build one day, or they know somebody who they will give a word-of-mouth referral to.” Total Window Solutions For FREE advice phone: (03) 214-4505 OR 0800 425 849 Suppliers of Quality Windows and Doors 195 Bond Street, Invercargill • Phone (03) 214-4505 Email: info@lewiswindows.co.nz • www.lewiswindows.co.nz Proud to supply Jeremy Skeggs Building Ltd Registered Electrician Registered Refrigeration Engineer Heatpump Supply, Service & Install Thermal Imaging s w o a n D E L D E T C L T L R I C A L Dawson Electrical Ltd 027 235 8063 dawsonelectrical55@gmail.com
