BUILDING A sked to craft a beautiful home that melded with the rugged Central Otago landscape and reflected a miner’s success in the gold fields has earned Cromwell based Hunter and Craig Building and Design ‘Gold’ and a rightful place in the Top 100, at the 2020 Master Builders Awards. Entered into the Southern region’s $1.5 - $2million category, the high achievement is affirmation of the company’s craftsmanship and passion for building bespoke homes to a very high standard. Nestled in The Boulders subdivision on the Cromwell – Tarras Highway, the 400sqm single storey home is built on rugged, gnarly country and hugs the rocks to become a natural part of the surrounding landscape. From its north face, clad in schist and cedar, the home commands breathtaking views of Lake Dunstan and the Pisa mountain range. Two years earlier the owners had tasked Hunter and Craig to re-create a rustic cottage as though it had been built by a couple of miners. Based off that miner’s cottage, the new home tells a story that the miners had indeed struck gold. Designed by Whangarei practice R&J Archi- tecture, the house embraces the wide-open spaces making full use of the rugged and natural landscape, with hints of the cottage brought through as a reminder of the miners journey. ”You walk up to the main entrance which is very unassuming, but then when the front doors are opened you look right down the house, welcomed by breathtaking views of the lake and mountains,” says Hunter and Craig company director Shaun Hunter. “The owners wanted the best and gave us the ability to focus on our craftsmanship to create a beautiful home that suited their lifestyle in a very magical part of the world and I believe we achieved that as judged by the owners and the wider industry. The team has made a perfect job with the workmanship and craftsmanship that has gone into the home.” Hunter and Craig Building and Design was established by Shaun and his business partner Derek Craig in 2013 with the vision to present clients with a complete suite of services from concept, design and consenting, through to project management and construction.
