H PA Group has been undergoing a series of changes, which will set the company up to meet future demand, says com- pany managing director Neville Brummer. For more than 20 years, HPA Group has provided planning, architectural, engineering and construction project management servic- es to clients in the healthcare and retirement lifestyle sector. Since 2005 it has also been deeply involved in feasibility studies, funding arrangements and management of operations, sales and marketing. Last year an amalgamation with electrical engineering firm Technical Solutions, saw the company bring this important aspect of its service in-house including injecting specific expertise into its executive team, says Neville. Additionally a joint venture with Senior Trust Capital has given HPA enhanced ability to arrange finance for its projects, he says. “These changes give us greater control over timing and quality of projects and add to our all-round risk control resulting in a better solu- tion for our clients,” explains Neville. He says that HPA has had a long association with both companies, meaning significant trust had been established making the transi- tion easy and creating a win-win. The move will also allow HPA to expand, bringing new clients on board by offering a one-stop-shop. This is important due to the significant opportunities in development of retirement villages and aged care facilities in New Zealand, says Neville. “It allows us to complete more projects faster to meet the need.” HPA was started in 1997 by Terry Coombs, who has over 30 years’ experience in interna- tional capital projects within the construction, mechanical engineering and design fields. He was joined in the directorship in 2003 by Nev- ille and Chartered Accountant Brian Thibaud. HPA offers a complete service from plan- ning, feasibility and architecture through to facility management. It guides clients through the often complex process of developing a new facility from scratch as well as redevelop- ments and small building extensions. “No project is too small,” says Neville. “Our versatile and experienced team of financial analysts, architects, engineers, and project managers ensures a balanced and integrated approach to project development from con- cept to completion.” HPA also undertakes its own projects, seek- ing investors interested in taking part. With ownership interests in villages HPA has a distinct advantage over independent consultants, says Neville. “We know the challenges and drivers that must be managed and respected if our clients are to achieve their goals.” HPA typically undertakes single level dwellings, creating high quality projects with outdoor space for residents to enjoy. Projects are built in small stages over years reducing capital investment requirement and risk. Metrapanel is the building material of choice due to its high quality, low mainte- nance requirements and rapid construction capability. HPA uses local contractors and suppliers where possible. In its residential lifestyle developments, HPA can take the project from bare land through to a fully operating people-based business. Along with villas and hospitals, facilities buildings are also be constructed including indoor pools, hair salons, communal or com- mercial kitchens, resident bars and lounges, crafts rooms, and libraries. Neville says that HPA strives to create an environment that encourages village sales and promotes a sense of community. A good example is Golden View at Crom- well. Currently underway the project will see a total of around 102 villas built along with a 60 bed aged care hospital. Neville says the pro- ject sold quickly as it allows residents to share in capital gains on their villa. HPA also allows purchasers to have input into the interior design of their home. Projects underway are Lochlea Lifestyle Resort in Ashburton, McKenzie Lifestyle in Geraldine and Longridge Country Estate in Paeroa. In the planning and resource consent stages are a 120 unit mixed housing develop- ment and aged care hospital in Clyde and a 250 unit village in Amberley, Canterbury.
