54 | ENGINEERING Site Weld NZ’s core focus is the mining, marine and transport industries along with some agricultural work. F antastic staff, fantastic customers and a ‘yes’ attitude have been the foundations of success for Dunedin-based engineer- ing business Site Weld NZ. Founded by Adrian and Steph Olsen in 2012, Site Weld NZ’s core focus is the mining, marine and transport industries along with some agricultural work. Since its birth Site Weld NZ has evolved from a two-man operation to a family focused team of over 40 with values that embrace a culture of helping each other to achieve. Creating a family vibe within the business where the staff weren’t just numbers but rec- ognised as individuals has been at the heart of Site Weld’s people management. “Steph and I know everyone’s partners and their children — it’s a real family here. I know it sounds a cliché, but here it truly is that. We stick to the values of helping each other out and we have really high staff retention.” SOREC - Site Weld NZ Positive attitude drives firm’s success Richard Loader “Customers come to us with a problem and we just take that problem away from them and find a solution. We will work day, night and weekends — it doesn’t matter. If the customer wants and needs it we will make it happen.” Adrian says he has always been told that if you want to be good at what you do you have to be passionate about it. “Steph and I saw an opportunity to provide the engineering service to customers that they deserved and that’s what we have always aimed to do. “Customers come to us with a problem and we just take that problem away from them and find a solution. We will work day, night and weekends — it doesn’t matter. If the customer wants and needs it we will make it happen.” In addition to the main Dunedin workshop, Site Weld NZ operates a satellite workshop in Cromwell and provides engineering services throughout the South Island, with its biggest client being Oceana Gold. “We do a lot of general steel fabrication, a lot of repair and maintenance work and a lot of conceptual design work. “We’ve just started a manufacturing branch within the business and now manufacture products for underground mining. “Our latest product is an eco-loo, which is an underground toilet that provides six months service before it needs to be emptied, through aeration, heat and evaporation.” Based upon introducing jobs to the region, Site Weld NZ recently received a grant of $350,000 from the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF), to be matched dollar for dollar by Site Weld. “We actually ended up spending a little more than dollar for dollar and purchased two pieces of machinery. One was a Climax Line Borer which machines out bushing holes in equipment like excavators. “The other machine was a Kinetic Profile Cutter capable of cutting steel, stainless steel and aluminium plate into various different shapes.” In addition to creating seven new sus- tainable jobs, including one apprentice, the machinery has enabled work to be completed much faster, reducing customer downtime. “With that machinery we’re also able to contract out our services to other engineering companies that don’t have that technological capability. We operate 24/7 so we can do the work over the weekend for other engineering companies reducing the lead-time for the work to be completed. While there are other profile cutters around the country we can undertake urgent jobs straight away for other engineering businesses.” Rainbow Paints proud suppliers of PPG Industrial Coatings to Site Weld NZ Rainbow Paints have had a long relationship with PPG Industries, the world’s leading coatings and specialty finishes company.
