56 | ENGINEERING Welding and Engineering Solving problems every time Welding and Engineering has been heavily involved in specialised earthquake strengthening work as well as delivering structural steel work for new buildings. from page 55 One keynote project at the University of Can- terbury required the installation of 500 tonnes of steel to strengthen an existing education building and involved close coordination with other tradespeople while working with mas- sive internal dampeners and seismic braces. “That was a showcase project for us,” says Chris, “I’d say that would now be one of the strongest buildings in New Zealand. “That experience of doing the specialised earthquake work amplified our skill set and so today we get the jobs no-one else can do, working with clients, owners and tenants to get steel where it’s needed, whether existing structures or new builds. “We have the equipment and we have the steel and between our senior team we have around one hundred years’ experience!” Welding and Engineering’s team has worked on many key projects around Christchurch such as the Justice and Emergency Services Precinct and Novotel Christchurch Airport. They were heavily involved in strengthening the city’s main shopping malls. Recent projects have included work for the Department of Corrections (multiple prisons), Christchurch Hospital and Summerset Retirement Villages. With a staff of 20, Chris describes Welding and Engineering as ‘a small-big company’ – big enough to take on large projects, but small enough to have that close working relation- ship with clients. It’s a local home-grown com- pany, with all steel used meeting New Zealand steel standards. “I’m the managing director but I’m also a tradesman with a hands-on approach. We work very closely together and there’s great camaraderie. Our goal is always to ensure that everyone who comes to us gets the help they need.” The workshop is well-equipped with cranes of all sizes and types along with plasma processing machinery and other equipment needed to complete the steel work. Welding and Engineering’s sister company called Metalworks NZ Limited employs a team of eight staff, undertaking light engineering and architectural aluminium and steel work. With a strong commitment to up-skill- ing and training, Welding and Engineering currently has three apprentices, with many former apprentices now working productively as fully qualified tradespeople. Welding and Engineering is pledged to giv- ing back to the New Zealand community and, just before Christmas, gifted a sign written vehicle to Cure Kids. • Hiab hire • Hiab truck and trailer • Swinglift • Flat deck and trombone trailer transport services To book call: 0211 644 466 Web: www.elevatecranetrucks.co.nz C R A N E T R U C K S E R V I C E S Konnect Fastening Systems are proud to support Welding and Engineering Ltd with a comprehensive range of structural fastening products and solutions
